Busted Windshield!

I noticed a bit of a glint in the top left corner of my windshield this morning on the drive in, figured it was just a streak of dirt. But once I got in the parkade in the light, I realized it's about a 12-inch crack!! Goes from top left down and to the right, just above my sightline. But it's going to make its way all the way across soon.

I have no glass coverage. What's a new windshield going to cost me? Any experience?

No idea. I've only ever had one replaced and it was a long time ago.

I I have a crack all the way across the bottom of my windshield. I'm not going to replace it because it's not in my line of sight and I know rock chips are inevitable in this city.

Auto glass insurance is a huge rip off here, if you can be guaranteed that you'll pay for the windshield and more in your premiums.

TRUE!! That's why I don't carry it. First quote is for $444. About what I expected, actually.

Okay, second quote is $279, and the guy says specifically North American glass, not "that Chinese garbage". Hmm.

Used to be $50 for the deductible.

I carry a separate policy for glass coverage. I paid $168.00 last year and it paid for it self already, went through 2 windshields in 3 months last summer joys of highway driving. It's only a $50 deductible.

I had AMI on my '07 from Jan 25/07. The renewal came in Nov/07 for Jan 25/08 renewal and I forgot to renew. The wording on the renewal was quite annoying: "this is the first and only notice you will receive", etc.

Wonder why they do it like that? Probably a PITA to get it on a "used" vehicle...

Well I bit the bullet and got my windshield done at Crystal Glass. The other outfit just seemed a little shady to me after talking with them a couple of times. The bad news: $450 (!)

The good news: I got some glass cleaner and this SWELL air freshener!

If they had really wanted to prevent a tantrum maybe they should have made me smell it before they handed me the bill. But I can go to my happy place now, anytime I want. If I can only find the dot of LSD that I know is somewhere on that unicorn.

Actually it's so annoying and putrid-smelling that it is now pulling duty keeping my eggshells and coffee grounds smelling sickly sweet until they are picked up tomorrow.

I think you're nuts wasting your money on a new windshield before the spring street cleaning, but it's only $450 so I'm sure you can afford to pay it again in a couple months.
