Dealer Service

Hey all, new to the site and new owner of a 2006 G35x.

Was calling around to a local dealership in the hopes of establishing a relationship. Asked about an oil change and was notified that it would be $100 for the "service".

I thought that was a little high and asked if that was regular for an oil change, and I indicated that I was a new owner and was trying to choose a dealership for service and with whom I could build a relationship. She advised me that this was normal and it included some other basic stuff (inspection, lube, nothing fancy). She then advised me that I had the option to go elsewhere, but she suggested that I stick with an Infiniti filter (since there were issues when using another filter).

Thought that was an interesting "first call" experience and wanted to see what you all were doing for oil/filter changes and if this indeed was the case.

I haven't taken it anywhere as yet. I'm based in Mississauga and work in Yorkville currently and I'm open to following up on suggestions for places to have it serviced.

Input is appreciated folks!

Is a rip off and you can use aftermarket filters with no issue. Been using Mobil 1 oil filters since the first oil changed. Generally a normal oil change assume you get new oil filter oil and labor is about 40 - 50 bucks. They claim they do an inspection on other stuff which is fine but is all visual inspection and nothing else and you can do that yourself. My suggestion is go to a mechanic that you trust and keep all the receipt for oil changes etc, and if you need a warranty issues and they claim you never had an oil change you will have prove.

Thanks folks.

It does sound like a rip to be honest. At this point, I'm chaulking it up to a simple miscommunication.

I liked God|ZIlla168's advice tho, to maintain receipts and the fact that he's not even used the Infiniti filter!!!

Good stuff!!!

Hoping to contribute more to the boards in due course. Thanks again.

congrats on the X and welcome.

where do some of you guys go (if not the dealer) for your oil changes? My previous car (GM) was going to Active Green & Ross and had no issues with them. Should I stick with them for the G?

go to nissan, they're obviously the same company so there wont be any hassles with them telling you that your oil filter caused a problem.

During warranty periods I HIGHLY recommend going to a dealer, if not infintiti go to Nissan, an oil change costs $40ish and you will have peace of mind that your name and km's are on their computer and you can save those receipts. I totally agree that infiniti's $100 is a jip.

My parents had a problem with their old 97 camry (a known oil sludging problem caused the cam lobe to punch out the block) and the dealer refused to do anything for them (under warranty) because my dad is not a "Toyota certified" tech and they claim that they cannot trust that he maintained it properly. (he did his own oil changes)

Best bet, like I did, go talk to your dealer's service rep, ask them if they'd honour your warranty should you choose to go to Nissan or any other place (active greenross, midas, etc).

Same thing happened to me with my Celica quite a few years ago. I was denied warranty work because I couldn't prove any service work was done, my room mate at the time was a mechanic and did my oil changes for me at home. Ever since then I have taken my new vehicles to the dealer for service.

$100 doesn't sound right unless it's for synthetic which is the dealer rate here.

BTW, there is no such thing as an Infiniti filter. It's actually a Nissan manufactured & branded piece.

What GZ said is right. Keep receipts and you're good. IMO, any dealer spewing that non sense about their filter is one I would want to avoid. There are a lot of high quality brands out there like Wix, Mobil 1, and even Napa and I doubt there has ever been an "issue" with any others.

It was around 50+tax last time at the dealer. Not outrageous but I wish it came with a rental car. What dealership was this?

It doesnt cost that much to do an oil change it is pretty obvious they are quoting you prices for their maintenance packages... I would strongly suggest taking the time to educate yourself on whats neccessary and what is recommended.. and to add to the confusion, theres 2 different maintenance schedules that is recommended and there is stuff that is required.

Required, meaning mandated as being the minimum maintenace for your vehicle by Infiniti.. i.e oil changes, filter changes, belt changes.. other oils etc. Brake servicing.

Then theres the maintenance that the dealers recommend crazy, not so crazy.. which basically includes more or less inspections and changing stuff out when you do not need to.

I feel your pain man and I have since religiously went to the dealer for any new car I owned, at least while it was under warranty (02 camry, 03 tiburon)

I don't wish the same pains to anyone else. Guys, use the dealer for REQUIRED maintenance (oil change, other fluid changes) while under warranty. If you find infiniti expensive, go to nissan for a basic oil change ($40ish CDN).

If $40 is too expensive at nissan, hell, sell the G and buy a Chevy AVEO, I hear the aveo "has more room"!
