Great write up! can't believe you saved so much money, thats fantastic.
BTW, is there any way to speed up this process? you said you put a deposit on the car and then waited 3 months. if the car you want is already on their lot does this erase the 3 month waiting period?
I heard it is hard to import BMW's over to Canada. you might want to check out some threads on e90post.com. i believe they make you change out the entire cluster which costs upwards of $1,000. and all the work has to be done at BMW...theres lots of BS that goes on.

They can sell used cars.
Border dealers will def maintain the company line re new cars.
Others.... have been known to turn "new" into "demo" (mgr drives it home)

But it's model dependant...
eg. the Z series, no such issue, & no duty (made in USA)

I believe the recall letter from BMW NA is now $500 and all BMW's require you to change the dash now. Which is $$ and a PITA. Also the the free maintenance program is not transferable to Canada so if you wanted to take advantage of it you would have to drive to the US.
I believe changing the dash will also illuminate a light on the Odometer stating it has been changed and this will make the vehicle harder to sell in my mind.

It is ironic b/c the daytime running lights can be activated through idrive, but this is not suffice in their eyes, they are doing this to recoup some of the losses in sales. I was very close to importing a 335 but gave up after I saw all the BS ppl havegone through, not to mention the 4 years of free service is not applicable once imported. He now gets around this by driving to Buffalo to get his car serviced. He told me he saved 19K on his purchase.
