Cordless lawn mowers?

Thinking about getting one. Any thoughts? Just tired of the gas fumes and noise?
Thanks in advance.

Interessting thought Sam.

I know I hate corded mowers because of the cord and lack of power.

I have never tried a cordless model. I wonder how the power would be in heavy grass in the mulch mode. If it was good in that category and a charge lasted a while it might be worth considering.

I really don't smell gas fumes with my mower and it is reasonably quiet. It is a gas powered Honda self propelled mower. I am very satisfied with it.

I just recently got one, Neutron brand.

Positives - quiet, clean, low maintenance, easy to operate, instant start

Negatives - battery dies too quickly (can buy additional batteries, but at high cost), only practical if you have a relatively small lawn, even at full charge I have to mow the same area twice to get it clean

What's wrong with gasoline motors? I just think of it as a car with 4.5HP. Never chokes or dies (except that time I flooded the spark plug).

I have a cordless (Black & Decker)I love it and wont buy a gas push mower ever again(I have a gas ride on) the cordless is light and quiet. The only issue would be battery life if you had a huge lawn you would not get it done in one charge. In my old house I did the front lawn in the morning and the back yard in the evening or the next day.

Thumbs down

I like the idea but the general consensus seems to be they won't work for an average person/yard.

Small equipment pollution regs are pretty well non existent. Most are very noisy and put out more pollution than 10 cars do in the same time.

Wayne, my dad has a SP Honda. It's a lot quieter and smoother and more fuel efficient than my similar craftsman B&S.

How big is your yard? I'm on about 15000sqft of land and a cordless mower would NEVER work.

Thats what I thought, they would be ideal for a small space.

Holy Smokes Ian You must be in good shape, it must take you hours to do all of your property with a mower like pictured above.
It takes me 1 hour and 15 minutes going non stop with my self propelled mower and your property is gigantic compared to mine.

actually, you'd be surprised about small engine emission regulations, while not as strict as cars (i think), they're starting to have to meet the same requirements, it won't be long before you'll be seeing catalytic converters on small engines, not to mention stratified charge two strokes (now that's pretty neat)...

as for cordless mowers, i agree, not practical for a larger yard, at least not till batteries advance further.

i used to repair mowers when i was a kid, probably the best were the old two-stroke lawn-boys. were quieter and smoother than most 4 strokes, not to mention torquier, (had a neat clutch for the blade too, if it were to bog down, the blade would stop turning without stalling, just had to whack the mower to get it going again)

Thanks for you opinions Gents, and the chuckle Ian. I remember when that particular cordless model was all the rage. I don't think I'd mind doing the front one day and the rear the next. Sears has a self propelled one that's on sale now.
Good choice on the B&D Gord, it was one of Consumers Reports pick.
