anyone here do their suspension install themself?

I was debating whether or not to sell my G this fall, but I think its too late now and I might as well keep it for another year. That said, I am going to install my suspension this spring.

For you canucks, how was the install? Was it an easy DIY, or did you run into a lot of issues with seized/rusty bolts?

Speaking from experience on other vehicles, working on cars in the salt belt is much harder than working on those clean so-cal cars that we often see pictures of within the other sections of this site. I envy those southerners.

I will be installing G S-tech springs, tokico d-spec struts, eibach rear camber arms & 20mm h&r spacers (unless I get the SSR MS1's that I have been dreaming of).

You need to rent a spring compressor. I would rather do it myself, my shop was going to charge me $400 for the install.

Yeah spring compressors can be borrowed from my local craptire.

I started the install on my front end last summer, and I found it exceedingly difficult to get the front strut assembly out from the stut towers....like they were too tall to remove. I guess you need to compress the entire assembly whiles its on the car before you can remove it?

The nuts on the top of the front shocks had to be cut off. You might have a problem with that.

They come out without compressing.
You need to disconnect the bottom end as well. (sway bar link)
It's also MUCH easier if you disconnect the upper A arm at the ball joint.

There a several DIY threads if you look around

Did it myself without any DIY. I just simply looked at it. Went hmm... OK, and did it.

Just grab your tool set and a spring compressor (although you may not need it but it is good to have it just in case), and go for it.

I have did the suspension myself as well.
I have a spring compressor, if you are in the West End/DownTown Toronto, I can let you borrow it.

Oh yeah, getting a FSM from online somewhere helps a lot too, since it tells you tq rating for each bolt. You need a tq wrench as well.

I did mine myself. Replaced springs and did sway bars front and back. Took me about 4 hrs, but remember I'm an old (54) fat man that doesn't do a lot of mech work anymore. It was a PITA but I had fun. If feels good to do your own work.

Tips:
Get a penitrating oil and spray eveything you are going to bust at least a day in advance.

Go to Harbor Frieght and BUY a spring compressor set for just $10.00.

Get four jack stands and a big piece of card board to lay on.

You don't NEED air tools, but they sure are nice.

While you have her up, flush the brake fluid with DOT 4

I did mine on my own its very straight forward. I did not use a spring compressor, for the rear I jacked up the lower spring mount and undid the outer spring mount bolt. I then removed the bolt then let the jack down slowly to remove the spring tention and reverse the procedure for the install. For the fronts remove the spring retaining plate bolt (the bolt in the centre on top of the strut) when its in the car or you will need a compressor or air tools to get it off once the assembly is out of the car.

^I did that too for the rears, but the spring compressor was useful for the front springs.

ive done springs and coils myself, its not hard, just time consuming, plan a 6-hr day to do it! My second time around took only about 2, but it was harder the first time!
