Roadtrip to Canmore

I am heading up to Canmore Alberta this weekend to take the girlfriend and the G up to the mountains....I will see if I can get some cool G pics. (maybe with a mountain or two included) I cant wait for my first roadtrip with the G....now I just need to avoid every rock that wants to chip my baby.

Question: I have about 1000km and was wondering if I should be using Cruise control or not? The dealer said not too in the first 2000km....but does it really matter?

Re: Roadtrip to Canmore

Although there's controversy about the entire issue of break-in, I'd follow Infiniti's recommendations about varying speed (for the most part).
But I think varying speed (actually, varying rpm's) is more important during break-in than keeping rev's under 4k.

I've heard that a constant rpm prevents uniform seating of the piston rings over their entire surface. I don't know if that's true, but it seems to make sense -- I guess the ring would get pushed up against the cylinder wall the same way on each stroke. On the other hand, the rpm's are rarely that constant; I think even with the cruise on, the ecu would be constantly varying rpm's to maintain uniform speed.

A guy I know who builds race engines said most piston ring break-in is done in the engine's first 100 kilometers, and during that short time you should give ocassional high revs (to redline, according to him) and allow the rpm's to fall down smoothly -- that apparently is the best way to seat the ring over its entire circumference. I've also read that many times in different places... but my thinking is, if that's true, then Infiniti probably does that during engine testing before the car leaves the factory, since they don't specifically recommend it? (I dunno...)

Probably the main reason for varying rpm's is to better allow all engine components (and other parts of the drivetrain) to fully assimilate with each other gradually.

Anyway, I figure a road trip would be a perfect opportunity to get the break-in over with and get to know the engine's characteristics by varying the speed. Plus it'd be more fun to drive. That could even be a good excuse if you got pulled over ;-) ("Sorry officer, I was just trying to vary my rpm's during break-in...") lol

Great place. We have a condo there and are currently having a duplex built in Three Sisters Parkway. Here's a shot of mine at the Tourist Info Bldg.
