Snow tires make a HUGE difference.
Glad to see you'r G likes snow, Hullio.
This 08 with the dunlop all seasons on the 18s just fail in the snow haha. i mean, it goes, but it does not turn or stop as well as id like it to.
My sisters bf has Yokohama Ice Guards on his 93 AWD Legacy Turbo winter beater and that thing is SO nice in the snow. Moves through everything.
I asked my dad if he'd get snow tires for this car, and he said no.
I can understand though. We will only have the car for 2 years, and he doesnt want anymore sets of rims in our attic.... we dont get as much snow in Mn as you guys do in Canada, though haha.
When i go north next year with my 05, im definatly putting Blizzaks on the 17s.

The Tire law should be implemented for Ontario as well, this way there will be slightly less accident this 08-09 Winter season.
Tire do make a big difference, I have Bridgestone WS60 and they do a pretty good job with traction in snow.

Winter tires are great for snow traction, but they shouldn't be made mandatory in Ontario. While I enjoyed 4WD and snow tires while driving around Collingwood, in the Toronto area there are maybe 5 days a year where you are actually driving on top of snow on a major road, and that's only if you are driving before the plows are out. By the time I leave my house at 8:00 am only the side streets are covered in snow.
Not every all-season tire is created equal, either. If you want to go down to an H speed rated tire on your G you can get Goodyear Tripletreds that do very well in the snow. Tripletreds are actually better than cheap snow tires. I've had Michelin Hydroedge on my wife's van for years and it's excellent as well. Considering in the GTA most winter driving is on wet or slushy roads I'm not surprised that I've usually had better traction with Hydroedges or Tripletreds than with Blizzaks. Snow tires, especially cheap ones, are not great at resisting hydroplaning.
To me, snow tires are a lot like 4WD. They help, but a lot of the drivers using them are over-confident and end up in a ditch anyway.
I've been driving for 14 years and only twice have I ever wished I had snow tires. Only one of those times it would have been inconvenient to stay in (had to get home from work).
I just drove to work this morning after a 10cm snowfall last night with Turanza EL-42 tires (rated very poor for snow) and I was ok. The SLIP light didn't come on unless I accelerated too hard, even on packed snow.
That all said, if you're driving on a set of crappy all-season tires you should either upgrade to something good or get snow tires. My last car was a Corolla that came with Goodyear Integrity tires, which are about as good in rain as a Hydroedge is in snow. If there is going to be a new tire law they should outlaw all these really cheap tires that offer barely adequate dry pavement traction. Maybe all-season tires should be tested for winter grip and given a proper rating. There are lots of ways to make tires safer and a lot of people would buy safer tires if they knew what they were getting.

Maybe they shouldn't be mandatory, but I think the government should at least offer some kind of rebate in order to encourage more consumers to get a set of winters. This is my first year on winters, and I love them.

I agree, offer a rebate or impose additional penalties for drivers who cause accidents and don't have snow tires. Making them mandatory wouldn't suit all of Ontario, and big brother laws suck anyway.
My insurance company gives me a percentage off my premium for using snows, that's a good start.
