The most humiliating defeat in history for the Liberals and the architect of this defeat is going to be Prime Minister. This is likely to be Canada's darkest hour. Can you even begin to comprehend handing Layton 6 cabinet posts and handing the swing vote to Duceppe.

Canadians need to rise up and insist that if the government falls, call an election. It is clear beyond any reasonable doubt that the one undeniable certainty is that voters sent a clear message to the Liberals in the last election that Dion should **** off.

This should be a call to rid this nation of the deficent British parlimentary system. It is not working too well right now.

The DOW and the NASDAQ were up 3% after the thrashing on Monday - they dropped about 5% on Monday. However, the TSX suffered it's single biggest loss in about 35 years (almost 8%), and yesterday we didn't rebound a single bit and lost another point.

This mess is simply going to kill our what's left of our economy. Offshore investors simply hate political instability and they are pulling out of Canada until we get this mess straightened out. If this this new government does indeed form a government, then I will bet the TSX and our foreign investor capital markets will simply dry up for the 18 months that they are in power.

Yes I agree, Harper is evil and probablly does eat kittens and punch puppies after he dines on hamster blood for supper, but he is running a very tight fiscal ship. Look at our banking system compared to the US. Canadian banks were given a 6.8 out of 7 rating by the IMF for their stability. We are still running a budget surplus, and assuming we spend our surplus for economic stimulus, we won't be trillions of dollars in the hole like the US or the rest of the world.

I voted for Harper in the last election, not because I liked him or the conservatives (I voted liberal my entire life), but I simply hate Dion. This guy can barely string a sentence together in English. I'm sure he couldn't have a conversation with my 4 year old (at least Ben understands the concept of a sentence tense). He comes across as an intellectual whiner - seems to me like the kid in school who ran to become class president on the basis that "I'm simply smarter than the rest of you, so vote for me!". Imagine if the tables were turned...do you think the liberal party would elect a leader who could barely speak French, don't think so. I'm sure he is a very inspiring leader in his native language, but 9 out of 10 provinces agree...you gotta speak English well to lead Canada.

Wow that was a rant...I feel better now.
31 years and it was actually 9.3% but who's counting?

The speeches were just more of the same, but I think Harper got his point that Canadians have the right to select our government. I was surprised that Dion's staff delivered his video to the media so late, if he can't send a video out on time what can we expect from him as the Prime Minister of Canada. I missed Layton's speach.

I didn't see Layton's either, but I think Dion's speech and its difficulty getting in on time is rather telling. He talks co-operation while he seeks to grab power. I think M Jean needs to put the needs of the country ahead of the confidence of the House, grant Harper his prorogue and let cooler heads prevail. Then if the Liberal Democratic Quebecois party wants to force an election, do it over the budget on its merits or lack thereof.

^I thought the speeches were pretty much as expected. There was some rhetoric and exaggerations on all sides.

I'm inclined to agree with your comments on that approach. It surprised me the Dion camp were 70 minutes late with their video that had both English and French on the same tape. As well the quality was very poor. While only a small thing it seems to continue a theme of disorganization and poor communication from the election campaign.

However the sticking point is going to be another costly election. It may get us the same result and no further guarantee there won't be another non confidence situation. Somehow I can't see an election happening.

Canadians need to consider carefully what the coalition is saying. Right now they seem to be claiming they will do a better job of managing the economy through this rough time. However, they are not able to say exactly what that is or what it will cost. Is that an improvement? If this is about confidence; as a Canadian and a taxpayer I can't say the proposed coalition gives me any more of it. We should be waiting for the Conservative's budget and judge from there.

Also a lot of what they are upset about was the "near" elimination of the publicly funded support of their parties. I for one support party funding from their own membership and not from public coffers or private companies.

That's relatively good news, but what comes next? Are the scheduled rallies still necessary to ensure the GG knows Canada doesn't want an unelected coalition government?

Remains to be seen. May be conditions. Harper is speaking now on CBC.

Edit: Parliament prorogued until Jan 26, when the first order of business will be the unveiling of a Conservative budget. Harper is making conciliatory noises toward the Opposition specifically regarding the budget. Perhaps Ms. Jean gave him a little pep talk or he's realized he simply must extend the olive branch.

Duceppe just came on and all we heard was 'Quebec, Quebec, Quebec...' Showing his TRUE colours, he doesn't give a **** about anywhere else. Calling Harper immoral...but he's missing the little fact that it was the GG's decision, Harper only requested proroguation.

These 3 stooges need to be banned from politics. Anytime I hear or see Dion in the media, my blood boils. He needs to step down asap. It is clear that he is in this for himself.
