Exclamation First major fix on the G (brake job)

Hey guys, after having her for 11.5 months (anniversary is coming up in a few weeks ), it's time for her to have her first major fix. I've got to the get the brakes done and OMFG it costs an arm and a leg to replace the pads/rotors. I'm actually going to have a shop lift it and tell me exactly if I can manage to not replace my rotors but if I need to bite the bullet I'll change them as well.

Any recommendations on shops in Toronto/Mississauga area that you would recommend? The Stealership quoted my $1400+ taxes for front/rear pads & rotors and I almost choked! I would attempt it myself but my garage is packed with junk and I can't make space and don't have time to wait a couple of more months. What have you done with your brakes??

Should I purchase my own and then take it to a shop to install??

Yes I'm quite the Noob

Don't bring it to the dealership. Go to a local shop.

Head north, Vic Simone. He did my last one. I'm very happy with the service and price. Also, you might do a search, lots of recommendations.

i ve got hawk pads and rotors( i ve got to check it for the brand) done at Simones, the [performance is good (not like oem but really close) and they charge i think 75 bucks/hr for labor, as far as i remember from their price list. and they know what they are doing, they will even explain you the process ,every single repair they do on your car..

Vic uses a canadian company for his rotors, can't remember off the top of my head. But they are not a major brand. Nothing wrong with them as I know a few guys using them on the maxima.

I could get you EBC sloted/dimpled rotors all around and Hawk HPS pads all around for 635 plus tax. No way anyone should be charging 800 labour for that

I need a brake job too... you just made me cringe.

At least the dealership didn't try to get 760 bucks out of you for a driver's side HID balast like they did with me. I called yesterday about Driver's side suspension rattle, they said it was the compression rod or spindle, 640 and 790 respectively. F*ck the dealerships.

I did my brake's for my Alberta inspection. Didn't have to do the rotors though I would have in a second. The brembo's were the best and easiest calipers I have ever worked with.

Jobber pads from partsource were $45. Took me about 17 minutues for the first side I did. The second took me 5.

I would recommend to anyone to just do this yourself. Just clean all the break dust off first... who knows what kind of pads they had on there before!

+1 The Brembo brakes are incredibly easy to service and rebuild. I got Hawk Pads and drilled rotors for about 700 bucks and installed them myself. I think I'm going to pick up some lightweight stop tech 2 piece rotors and a set of track pads for lapping days. Not sure if I'll go with the hawk again - they stop okay but not as good as the OEM. They do have a lot less brake dust. I may try the NISMO pads or the EBC greenstuff pads. Do Not get Axxis pads, they were terrible.

^good info on the pads. I don't enjoy the dust now but would rather have that than inferior pads and stopping.

$1400+ tax? You're lucky!

Today Dixe/401 Infiniti quoted my Brembo coupe $4300. I am pretty sure there is a brick of sh*t still on the service chair...

That is exactly the reason I learned to fix these myself. The Brembo brakes were always a cash grab for the dealers. Some people will actually pay that -it's rediculous. For 4300 you can buy the most expensive StopTech or Brembo system on the Market.

Buy some high quality rotors and pads and do it your self. These brakes are by far the easiest to service that I have ever owned. Once the car is on the jack stands I can swap out 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads in under an hour. I laughed when the dealer said that it was 1.5 hours per side - and called them filthy liars.

Question: can I extend the life of the rotors if I don't let the pads wear out too much? I was told by a mechanic many years ago that once the pads wear out and the rotors start getting scraped, that's when they need to be replaced. I've heard from plenty of people who have shops replacing their rotors at every brake job, but that shouldn't be necessary.

I'm wondering if it doesn't pay to replace the pads yourself way before they wear out since it's a quick and cheap job.
