Chris,

Have you thought about a single speaker sound bar like this...

^^ Good suggestion - it has the advantage of being able to center up the dialogue. Talk to SwivelHips, he's got the Yamaha version of that and he loves it.

they sure can. they are amplified, you set them on a medium volume setting and you adjust the volume through your tv. They have at least 2 rca inputs (maybe more, i have companion2)on the rear of them that hook up to your tv-audio-out, and even leave a spare in case you want to plug something else in there. I also like that there is no on/off switch, as they only come on when a source is detected (not sure about all the models, i know mine does this)

as for your bookshelf speakers, they may be good, but you need an amp to push them.

I vouch for their awesomeness. the quality is AMAZING

See if it is still on sale at Dell / Best Buy. I just picked the Logitech Z-5500 5.1 THX certified for $280. It has toslink / optical in and onboard DTS decoding. I set it up for my parents but they are only using it in a 3.1 config. It actually has a decent sub and I am certain that it will beat those bose systems that you listed hands down.

the bose cinemate costs a bit more but is definitely more powerful.

haven't heard the logitech one bigwilly's talking about but seems like a good price.
