Which gas station you use?

Which gas station you use?
Most of the time, I trust Sunoco gas station and believing that thier gas is the best brand for the G and I've use Octane 92 or 94. Sunoco is the only gas station that carries the higher octane than any other gas station in Toronto Area.

Re: Which gas station you use?
Why would you need to use 92 or 94?
I've been known to be wrong before, but....
I was always led to believe that the higher octane is only for knock control, not higher performance. If the engine is designed for 91, isn't the extra money spent on higher octane just a waist of money??

Pretty well correct. The compression is just not high enough to warrent the extra octane versus cost. However if I was using a turbo or forced injection ... buy the best octane available.

I try to use Sunoco when I can. The problem is, there aren't any near my house but there is one near my gym.
I've heard that Sunoco carries the best gas (source: Car Help Canada). Maybe it's just my imagination but I feel my car is slightly quicker w/ Sunoco 94 than it is w/ other stations' 91.

Re: Which gas station you use?
I switched from Ultra94 to Esso 91 early this year with no problems yet or any difference in performance (stock engine). Reason for switching is I earn a free car wash and/or snacks every 3rd fill up with their loyalty points and there is an abundance of Esso stations in GTA.
Ultra94 is supposed to be better for the environment and lower in sulphur and all that, but then why drive a 3.5 litre V6 engine in the first place if that were a major concern...

Re: Which gas station you use?
The big question is - "Is the fuel I'm buying actually what the sign on the pump reads?" As a motorcycle racer (pro/expert/master calibre), I can assure you, one of the most important factors is fuel source, and the other is turnover. As prices go thru the roof, fewer people are putting hi-test in their tanks "just because". If the manual doesn't call for it, people aren't using it. So if your local station doesn't turn over a lot of premium fuel, what started a few weeks ago as 91 may be far less than that now. Oh sure the car will compensate for it in most cases, but that explains why a poster running Sunoco super hi may feel a difference. The car is actually getting what it's asking for. I can honestly say that my car runs better on Sunoco (even the 92) and Flying J (incredible turnover rate) than it does on Pioneer.
Do stay away from Shell and PetroCan, who were both written up last summer in the Toronto Star (multi-page scathing). The two have brought a ton of woe upon GM (especially Aleros) and Audi, as well as a few unlucky others, whose fuel sensors have been corroded to the point of malfunction by extraodinarily high sulphur content in some Canadian-pipeline-delivered fuel. At least one poster here had a fuel sensor go south and read full when the tank was as good as empty.

Thanks for the useful information! That explains a hell of a lot to me. In high school, I drove a 80s Lincoln towncar, with over 300,000 kms on it, and the engine would just ping and ping all day long. I always got my gas from the same corner petro canada, which was never busy. I then upgraded to using premium all the time, and that was ok for a while, and then the pinging started again. As soon as I switched to the other neighbourhood corner Esso, using premium the pinging stopped. Then I switched to regular grade at the Esso just to see if it would ping, and sure enough, the engine was fine.
I thought it was my imagination, or my car was just being difficult to me since I had enough trouble keep that car running with the budget I had. Now I know I wasn't crazy, there are differences in gas stations.
