anyone know something about this .. please feel free to let me know what mess i am in ...

story is .. i went for an oil change , thought its 80k km on my car i should get the differential oil changed.

So i got the engine oil and differential oil changed from Mr. lube. 15 mins thing and i was out

after driving just 3 km, i noticed sounds coming from the rear right side like grinding metal on metal sounds. it was only coming when the road was a little bumby, so i called mr. lube they were closing and i asked them to check it, as i turned around, not even 1 km more the car just hit the breaks on its own, i saw another mr. lube near the place i stopped so i took it in for them to look at it.

they said it had too much differential oil, so they leveled it and said to take a drive around the block ... which i did, only this time the car completely stopped with nasty sounds like the breaks were engaged. So i put it in reverse and back up, it was fine but each time i hit the breaks it was giving some out weird sounds.

anyway so the mr. lube guys on the second site called the people from the shop i got the oil changed and at this point my car was not drivable.

the manager said they will tow it tomorrow to get it checked by their mechanic ... we let the car stay in neutral ... and even then it would not go forward which was really weird but i am guess something is majorly Fed up.

anyway if anyone has any kind input or know if extra diff oil can screw up this bad ... let me know

 

Wow, that sucks. What I'd like to know is how in the holy hell they can overfill a diff? The filler plug is at the right level unless they pressurized it. Good luck with the remedy.

 

yeah the other shop drained it to the right level .. i dont know what the f they did .. but i got screwed over on a nice sunday ...

 

did they make sure to use gl-5 in the differential?

 

they used synthetic castrol go 75w90 and gm gm differential additive

i think oil is correct

 

It would be impossible to over fill it you can only fill it as high as the fill plug anything more will run out as you fill it or as you attempt to put the plug in it will run out, even if they did I am not sure how that would cause it to seize up Also you do not need the GM additive as the VSLD is a sealed unit. Never take your car to a quick lube for diff or tranny changes you are asking for issues . It sounds like the diff is ruined more than likely they drained the fluid and never added any and the second shop is covering for them. I hope they buy you new diff and you learned your lesson about quick lubes they are usually ok for an engine oil change but anything else if I dont have time to do it myself I go to the dealership.

 

yeah ... i was there for the engine oil so i thought i might as well get that done too, i dont know what they did ... cause they were under the car and i was not allowed to go under .. but when the second shop opened the fill plug it was draining fluid from the fill plug. i guess i did learn my lesson here

 

That seems what likely happened. +1000 on new diff -- sink your teeth into these guys and do NOT let go until it's 100% fixed or compensated. Doesn't help much now, but I also agree that I would never let those quick lube clowns touch my car. Really sorry to hear you're going through this, Raja.

^^...can't see how you'd grenade a diff in 4kms even with no lube. Fingers crossed for you.

 

yeah tomorrow i will know more when their mechanic checks it. Just mad about the whole thing. I hope its fixed within the week otherwise i wont be able to make it for the 19th mini meet in edmonton

 

Raj did you see them open the fill plug and oil leak out?? Because it generally dosent gain oil the so called extra oil would have run out when they were putting the plug in. I have changed my dif oil several times and my tranny oil 5-6 times they are the same you fill them till the oil runs out the fill plug then you put the plug in. If there was too much it would have been a very small amount, i would think it would be impossible to overfill it to the point of causing your diff to seize . I hope they take care of you and get you another diff.

 

How can overfilling it cause issues like there is no fluid in there. If you put extra fluid it should come out of the breather up top right?

OP I would bring it to the dealer to check it out. Relying on the mechanic at the place that cause the problem is fishy eh?

Did the other shop give you something in paper that the other shop messed up? Get what ever you you can get in writing!

 

Sounds like either they never put any oil back in or something foreign ended up in the diff and jammed up between the ring and pinion causing it to lock up. Either way its destroyed. My money would be on them forgetting to put fluid back in though.
