Re: Auto insurance changes in 2005??
I've not talked to my Ins. co. yet about the subject, but will on next renewal.
They've never talked about this b4, and there's no mention in my policy.

FWIW...
I just talked to RBC today.
They had no problems with mods, just wanted to know $ value.
They say wheels don't count as a mod.
I got a quote for a G35 sedan with suspension mods (@$1000 value). It was $1,330 per year.
Multiple policies would discount annother 12- 15%

About mods. I've talked to ING insurance few months ago, and what they said is they are not going to cover any loss caused by your mods, and they won't replace your mod parts. The mods may caused the loss that are not covered are major engine mods brought significant power increase, and lowered ride height lower than traffic law limit.

I don't know the exact law, but believe it's the width of two fingers. That's what a cop told my friend.
I've also heard that the bottom of your bumper cannot be lower than the lowest point of your rim. (I'm assuming they are talking about Stock rims)

Thanks, but I'm not sure what you mean by
"it's the width of two fingers"
Is that ground clearance?

According to the Highway Traffic Act, the legality of lowered ride height is a judgement call made by the police officer. (since there is no universal standard for "finger width", that's just an approximation the cop might use as a starting point).
It comes down to whether or not the officer thinks your ride height is safe (for example, if it exposes underbody parts to scraping on the ground, or if you rub, or if your shocks are bad and you have too much bounce, etc.)
Here's a useful reference you guys might want to bookmark or read. Scroll down to "Lowering of Cars, Ride Height, Skirt Packages" for what the Act says regarding this.

Re: Auto insurance changes in 2005??
Back to the Q, I can answer to some small degree, some of the concern from real world this week. My wife got smacked bad by an idiot suffering road rage last month (Honda Accord EX V6). Since it doesn't have HIDs, I bought her some PIAAs for the low beams, and Silverstars for the highs. It has a K&N drop-in as well. Insurance company, appraiser and body shop all gave the same indication. If that's what's in the car, we'll replace it under insurance claim for the accident if necessary. Same goes for diamond-kote under and over (only the G gets the full meal Zaino deal). And if I had aftermarket wheels and one got scratched or dinged, they said they'd take care of that too. So, I'm not sure how far this would go- perhaps if you have a blown engine dressed to the nines, they might balk, but not on any of the minor stuff I mentioned.
Cheers,
Derek

Re: Auto insurance changes in 2005??
Sorry to hear about your wife's accident, Derek.
I once had a similar experience with my insurance company. Years ago, I got rear-ended in my Dodge Stealth. The appraiser was made aware that my rear spoiler was an aftermarket modification, and yet the insurance company replaced it (with the equivalent OEM part, with my approval).
That's how it should be, since that modification (as in your wife's case) did not contribute in any way to the collision.

Re: Auto insurance changes in 2005??
I confirmed with my friend last night. He told me to take your hand as if you are going to shake someone's hand, hold out your index and middle finger together. The height (sorry I said width yesterday!!) of those two fingers is the acceptable distance between the wheel well and the tire. As long as you can put those two fingers in, you should not have any problems. If you cannot, it's really up to the Cop and how he or she feels that day!
