Auto insurance changes in 2005??

Have any of you guys heard about this? I was in 401/Dixie Infiniti getting my 12K done and I struck up a conversation with one of the mechanics. We were initally chatting about the Grounding Gear kit I'd installed and he casually mentioned to me that he was going to have to sell his Skunk2 coilovers if he couldn't get coverage. I asked what he meant and he informed me that as of December 2005, insuring companies will no longer cover cars if they have lowered the car OR are using anything other than stock rims. I was shocked and appalled, since my next purchase was going to be bigger rims - 19s or 20s.

As he put it, if a car is in an accident and is found to have larger rims or lowering springs/coilovers, the insuring company can cancel your policy on the spot (after Dec 2005). Apparently, he also added that engine mods are going to be next on the list sometime down the road.

What is this all about? Is this guy crazy? Or am I not the first to hear about this? This will totally kill the 'tuner' scene am I right?

Can anyone clarify this for me?

Thanks,
Al

That would be crazy!

I can't see the legal basis for that, unless there was a study that showed non-OEM rims or suspension mods were somehow dangerous and directly linked with an increased risk of an accident.

What if the accident had nothing to do with the car having such modifications? What if you purchased the non-OEM wheels/ springs/ coilovers at the dealership as a dealer-installed option?

The irony is that the insurance industry have been fighting for years to endorse aftermarket (non OEM) parts for vehicle repair because these parts are usually much cheaper. They want the right to deny more expensive OEM parts if there is an acceptable aftermarket equivalent part available.

So obviously they don't mind the use of aftermarket parts when it suits them.

I did a web-search using various keywords and could find nothing related to this proposed policy change in Dec. 2005... so I hope the person who told you this was mistaken.

But thanks for the heads-up KamikazeG!
Has anyone else heard this?

Hard to believe it would even be legal to invoke such a move. Log this one in the "I'll believe it when I see it" column.

I hope its mechanic 'gossip' - but he seemed pretty serious about it, since he had modified his car as well.

But I'm not taking any chances I'm giving my insurer (Meloche Monnex) a call tomorrow morning and see what I can find out!

It's already been happening for about a yr. Don't believe me? Call your insurer & tell them you're gonna lower your car or get bigger wheels & see what they say. Most of them will tell you they can no longer cover the car.

It has already been happening (people getting cancelled after accident, not being covered for accident). The amazing part is insurers aren't even sending out a letter telling people they'll be denied coverage if they're modded & in an accident. Apparently, there's a clause that if you do anything to the car, you're supposed to tell them - therefore they don't need to send a letter saying you'll be denied coverage if you have mods & have an accident.

I sure hope this is not an issue.

This would kit the **** out of the aftermarket industry.
I would hate to have to get rid of my Eibachs & wheels

Re: Auto insurance changes in 2005??

Since when did the isnruance companies needed any legal basis for whatever they do?

Sounds to me like another deal they stroke with the liberal scumbags in charge.

I mean where in the WORLD do you find a place that for some people the cost to insure the car is almost half as much or more compared to what they pay for their car payment which includes interest too! And I don't even mean anyone with a bad driving record or any tickets.

I thank god every single day that I get to live at least half of the year in California where the government doesn't try (or doesn't try as much at least!) to rip you off every day of the week through numerous taxes and cut-backs.

Sure, there is "free" health care but at what cost? Seriously guys, how long more should we, as Canadians and Ontarians put up with an irresponsible and lying government who's willing to sell the soul of citizens for the welfare of a few botton downed thives in a so called "industry"?

Sorry but I just had to vent off my anger :-)
Sorry if I hijacked the thread but I bet a lot of fellow G owners specially in Ontario share my pain...

Actually, insurers started voiding coverage on modded cars when the PC were in power (insurance is regulated provincially, not federally). Remember, part of the reason for McGuinty's election was he'd reduce rates by an avg of 10% (rates had been soaring when the PC were still in power).

BTW, my rates have gone down about 35%.

I'm not a Liberal supporter, just pointing out the PC's role.

You got it right and I am no PC supporter either. Infact I don't support any of the parties in Ontario as I feel they are all incompetent.

If you don't mind me asking what insurance do you use? And is it a group insurance by any chance or personal?
It's so stupid to void coverage on modded cars.

Re: Auto insurance changes in 2005??

I'm a political science specialist student at U of T. Politicians never keep all their promises, regardless of party. They go where the wind blows.

I'm w/ State Farm, I'm the 1st driver & my dad is the 2nd driver on my car.

Strange, but the rate on my dad's car isn't cheaper (he is 1st driver, I'm 2nd on his car). My rates went down a lot but his didn't go down at all. My dad's rate was low to begin w/ (clean record, 20+ yrs) so I guess it wasn't going to get any lower.

I'm not a huge State Farm fan (service issues), but they're the cheapest for me.

J_P :

We used to have State Farm for some of our investment properties and they really do a sloppy work alright! Double billing and triple billings were needed to get us to cancel with them and never go back since couple of years ago.

Anywho, I actually did my Engineering up in Galbraith building :-) Loved that school man...

I'm actually thinking of switching to either the Professional Engineers group insurance or that of the U of T Alumni, Meloche Monnex insurance which I've heard a lot of good about.

Right now RBC have had the pleasure of picking my pocket for the past year or so. I'm picking up a new 2005 sedan in a month as one of my girl friends will take over my 2004 and hopefully I will figure out who to get insurance with soon.

Cheers

Re: Auto insurance changes in 2005??

ALLSTATE Insurance sucks big time! Allstate still billed me that I don't have 1998 Honda Prelude anymore. I sold the car like almost 2 years ago and I canceled the Allstate on the very same day. Today, I got the bill stating that my bill payment is overdue! Allstate is totally F**k up!! I'm with RBC all the way, best services I ever had.

Re: Auto insurance changes in 2005??

whoa man, thats CHEAP, I'm paying like 400 on a 2004 SEDAN!
I've had a license for 6 years, 5 years of which is G class and no accidents no tickets and I'm just turning 24.

You won't believe how many companies I called, even tried to get qoutes with a richmond hill postal code which did reduce it a bit but still pretty darn expensive compared to what I pay in California.

In Cali, My girlfriend's 2003 Volvo S40 with me as 2nd driver total insurance is like 75 bucks a month! And it has comprehensive and rental car insurance too.

the only good thing about RBC is that they have great customer service and obviously since I do my banking with them they try to be super nice to keep my business. I'm gonna call em and tell em I've had better quotes and see if they will reduce my insurance else I will move right on to some other company.
