Re: Synthetic Oil??

Use only synthetic after the break in. All synthetic fluids are Motul. Infinti Yorkville changed by brake fluid, clutch fluid, transmission fluid and motor oil to full synthetic. Makes a real difference.

Re: Synthetic Oil??

Mobil 1 from 2nd change on '04 Sedan.
===> both in Canada
Mobil 1 since 70K on '01 RAV4 as well

Mobil 1 since 2nd change on '03 Volvo S40 ====> San Bernandino Valley with ambient easily over 110 in summer.

engines run smoother overall but specially in winter cold starts.

Re: Synthetic Oil??

I use synthetic and have since my first oil change. I drive about 4,000 km per month and change my oil every 10,000km. My last car went 300,000 km changing every 10,000km, the engine was never touched! I would never use regular oil as I drive the living [censored] out of my car!

Re: Synthetic Oil??

duhprez / jandc:

How much do you pay for Motul synthetic oil change and what grade? I used Motul 8100 0W40 synthetic on my last change and was shocked it cost $100. Amsoil 10W30 would have been less than $70 (at a different shop).

My mechanic said I can run 15000 km before next change. However, I likely will change around 8K.

Re: Synthetic Oil??

Yeah I think it was just under $100 for Motul 8100 Ester E-Tech 0W-40. I don't know how it is compared to Amsoil but I'm happy with it and plan to get the oil change done again in a couple of weeks.

Probably true you can run synthetic for 15 k before next change but then what about the oil filter? I think that needs to be changed 3 months/6k

Re: Synthetic Oil??

I also use Motul 8100 E-tech 0W-40 synthetic and have an oil change at every 6000km (manufacturer's recommended schedule). It is just under $100.00. Based on my driving pattern in the city (rush hour stop & go), high speed highway and canadian weather conditions, I consider the oil change price to be cheap insurance in making sure that my vehicle has the best motor lubrication protection in the market.

I've heard that Amsoil is pretty good quality as well and it's up to you and your preference. I just prefer Motul as that's also what I use in my sport bike.

One thing I don't understand about some drivers is that those who go for a cheap oil change and then add some sort of aftermarket oil additive or engine treatments (e.g. Slick 50, Duralube, etc.) thinking that they'll enhance engine protection and improve the lubrication qualities of motor oil. All those additives and treatments are a total waste. Just get a good quality oil change with a quality filter and you're done.

The only thing you're doing when you're adding engine/oil additives is lining the oil company's bottom line.
