new IPL line from Infiniti
I was just talking with someone about this today. I do not understand Infiniti - the M is an established segment for BMW, entirely re-engineered car (new engine, new suspension, tranny, steering etc) compared to the regular 3, 5, 6... same with AMG.. in fact, even Lexus re-engineered the IS when they did the F. So why can't Infiniti engineer something new for once with this new "division"? I like Infiniti's, really, I do, but the whole 15 year old VQ thing is getting seriously tired. Design a new engine for crying out loud. If you're going to try to make a "performance division" don't just slap a spoiler on the car and add 18hp through intakes.
Hell, if they want to take shotcuts at least put a downtuned version of the GT-R's engine in this thing so it at least stands a chance vs an M3/C63/ISF etc.

^+1...i completely agree with your whole statement...and seriously adding 18hp and some cosmetics mods isnt really gone cut it up in the big leagues...a NORMAL G37 can add 18hp and save money and be as fast at the IPL G37 hahaha wackkk

While, I agree with what you guys are saying, keep in mind the small price difference between the G Coupe and this new IPL version. It's less than $5k, according to that article, and yes I realize that it's estimated pricing. You aren't getting the performance of an M or an AMG, but you are not paying for it either. The difference between a 335i Coupe and an M3 Coupe is close to $18k. Like everything in life, you get what you pay for.
^ true enough. but then i argue what is the point? who are they marketing to? the guy looking for the performance version (such as M & AMG versions), or the numbskulls who can be duped by salespeople extolling the "virtues" of this souped-up G. either way this is a strange proposition.
as much as i like Infiniti it is moves like these that devalue the credibility of the name brand, and that affects all of us on here. remember when Cadillac introduced the Cimarron (sp?)?

Infiniti isn't the problem, it's NISSAN.
I honestly don't have a problem with the new line, it's Nissans marketing strategy that's completely left wing.
All this should be is the g37 + sport aero package or something simple. Performance my a$$.
I agree with the g56 comment. Or a g45sc. Haha.

I am not automotive marketing genius; I can't even imagine the amount of study/metrics Infiniti uses to determine if something like this G IPL will be a good idea or not. That said, to me, it doesn't make any sense at all in the same way the 335i and 335is make no sense to me; but at least there all BMW did was add an "s", not try to sell the 'is' as a "performance branded" 335.
I think Infinti should do like everyone else and offer more trims of the same car. So a regular G37 is just that, a G37. Sport package = same badge, people who need to know will know, and IPL can be G37S. Then when they decide to make a real IPL grab one of those awesome Merc 6.2L's (or better yet a detuned GTR engine) they have access to and drop that in, redesign the suspension and *really* compete with the AMG and /M.
I think the thing that has turned me off Nissan/Infiniti a little lately is that they don't seem to care much about real performance any more. I understand the economy is crap, and yes companies like Honda are all but giving up on performance too; but you see Lexus doing the IS-F and LFA, BMW engineering engines like every day, Merc doing wild stuff like the Black Series, Audi with the R8... I know, I know, GT-R...but I'd love to see a real performance Infiniti; something that they can brag about Nurburgring times with.
I guess I don't care about this as much as most Infiniti enthusiests because i know I mod the $hit out of everything I own anyway but the mechanical rear diff is nice and the quicker ratio steering rack are great improvments. I also love the red stitching on the seats both my wifes Altima SE-R and my Titan pro off road have the red stitching and it just seems like a nice touch. The body kit would be good stiffer springs and nice wheels are things that would appeal to the average person that wants something a little sportier but are not really into aftermarket modding. i think the improvments are nice sure all hard core car guys would love the 3.8TT out of the GTR but this is a nice start and looks like Infiniti is moving the right direction targeting the younger buyers instead of focusing on the 50yr old business man that I feel was the target before
I have talked about getting a G37 in the past I personally said in my case the base model would be the best because i would change out brakes, wheels and most of the other things the "S" model offers but I think this is a step the right direction hopefully down the road we will get some cool products. Nismo JYP had a few cool things for our cars so hopefully that trend will continue to grow.

Wow... you guys sure are being whiners about this.
The IPL G37 Coupe is Infiniti's move to combat the BMW 335i/335is coupe. You'll see other IPL offerings to compete better in other segments--e.g., an IPL G37 Sedan to face the 335i sedan and S4.
This is not a move against the likes of the M3, S5, RS4, C63... big-brother Nissan already has the GT-R that trumps all of those, and also dips into Porsche's wallet-share.
If you were expecting an Infiniti GT-R, you need to understand that this is a lower price and higher volume play than that.

We do understand it; I think you guys are misunderstanding us (or me at least). I know this is where IPL begins, I know the cost will be lower, I know they are meant to compete with S4s and 335is's; my point is from a marketing standpoint it doesn't make much sense to me. Why have your first offering from a newly badged performance line put the idea into consumers heads that it is a slightly modified version of a car you already sell?
I said it above, I think from a marketing perspective they should have a G37 (which would also include the current S), a G37S (which would be the current IPL), then later an IPL that is an entirely different car.
The way BMW/Merc/Audi made the /M, AMG, and RS line so prestigious was to make it a car that was completely different than the line it came from. The way Infiniti is planning to use IPL it will just be like Acura's "Type-S"; pretty much meaningless.

Your 100% right. Just as prev. stated, the Nissan GTR already proved the performance side of the make. The question is why did Infiniti decide to come out with a PERFORMANCE line and not really upgrade the performance. Its hyping people up for nothing to me. The IPL G37 should be called the G37s (as prev. stated) but that's already taken. We need the IPL to be a line up of turbos, superchargers, or big souped up naturally aspirated motors! If that's not going to happen anytime soon than please Infiniti, release the Essence beast.

Last week, during the annual automotive Woodstock that takes place on the Monterey Peninsula during the third week in August, Infinti announced the IPL. That's Infiniti Performance Line (not to be confused with an IPO). Infiniti's plan for IPL reminds me of Ford's original mission for SVT (before that got all messed up) which was to begin with mainstream Ford models (like the Mustang, F-150, and Contour) and crank up the performance, the sporty look and feel, the luxury and exclusivity levels, and such thereby create something special without the price going entirely nutso. The first model to get the IPL treatment is the G Coupe. The treatment is straightforward and somewhat predictable, but really well executed.
A mellow body kit cranks up the snarky look factor, and the VQ family V-6 gets its tail twisted up to 348 horsepower at 7400 revs, and the exhaust system is tweaked to share more of the engine's tunes. The spring rates have been increased, and the shocks retuned for even better handling. And the IPL G wears exclusive wheels, tires, and color combinations too. Take your choice 'tween a 6-speed manual or 7-speed paddle shifter automatic transmissions.
A few of the assembled wags whined "why no V-8?" Without getting into whether or not the Infiniti V-8 will fit into this platform or not (I'm told it doesn't) the fact is that would have entailed a serious re-engineering job, a full emissions and safety recert, and it of course would have driven the price range half way to the moon. Will it outrun an M3? No, but that's not its mission, or its pricepoint.
I haven't driven the IPL G coupe yet, but will in a month or so, and we'll tell you how it does. But on the surface, I think they've got the formula right. It's far more than just a "Sport appearance package," and should make an already smart performing car that much better. Pricing has yet to be announced, but Infiniti promises it'll be good value for money, and that the performance gains will justify the cost delta over a standard G37 Coupe. I hope so, and I suspect it'll all make sense once we see the window sticker, and the test numbers. Stay tuned, as we'll give you the lowdown as soon as we've put our butts in the seat. And IPL won't stop at the coupe; though no announcements have been made, my guess is that the new M sedan, and perhaps the EX SUV/crossover, will get the IPL injection.
