Hard Time Starting G

The horror, the horror…

I went on vacation for a week so my G has been sitting idle in my garage. When I was about to make the journey to work this morning and turned the key to start the beast, it wouldn’t start! It sounded like it was trying very hard to wake up. I tried turning the key a couple times but to no avail. Finally, I gave it a bit of gas and turn the key again, and it came to life. I let it run for a few minutes before start driving, and everything seems fine afterward. I know it has gotten cooler in the last week in Toronto, but this doesn’t seem right. My G (2003.05) is about a year and nine months old, I only use Shell Gold, and I take it to the dealer for all schedule services.

This horrid incident actually brought back flashback of some long suppressed memories. Twice during last winter, it took a few trys before the car would start, but the weather was really cold and it was parked outside all day, so I blamed it on that (it never occurred to me that all the other cars--which are older--in the parking lot started with no problems).

Things like this shouldn’t happen to car of Infiniti’s quality, so I assume there is something wrong with my G. Does anyone have any similar experience?

I am obviously not mechanically inclined. I will be taking it in for a 36,000km service very soon; should I ask the technician to check for certain things?

Hmm…on the subject of service, is there any recommendation for a place to service your G in northern GTA (Markham, Richmond Hill, etc.)? Aside from the expensive dealers?

Any suggestion and advice will be GREATLY appreciated! MANY, many thanks in advance!

Have them check the charging system. Sounds like it may be weak, or something has run down the battery.
They will easily see if it's charging properly and if the batt is good.
They can also determine if there's a slow electrical drain somewhere too.

Alta Infiniti has a good rep (north GTA) and Yorkville Infiniti downtown is good.

Thanks for replying, subrobo!

No, I didn't try turning on the light...what do you mean?

It's weird, because it has only been a week. And I did check, nothing in the car was on (e.g. lights, drawers opened, etc.)

I hope it's just the battery and nothing serious.

I used to have a similar problem, occasionally the car would be hard to start, with no particular pattern. Since installing a grounding kit (Gord Gee's), this has never occurred again. If the battery and charging system checks out ok, you may want to consider this, not too expensive and everything electrical seems to run smoother.

Re: Hard Time Starting G

Thanks a lot for all your help, everyone! You have been very helpful.

Just one last question...what is the ballpark figure of the grounding kit and can all dealers install it.

Thank you again!

HappyT-
The kits are not expensive, but are dependent of the number of grounds ordered.
I suggest you give Gord(gee) a call for details on that, and a call to Jerry at Yorkville Infiniti for details on install.

Re: Hard Time Starting G

The installs are not that difficult, especially up to 6-Wires. Hyper ground even girls can do it!
The additional GroundingGear™ developed wires are not that difficult either, but take about 45 minutes, and can be done on a separate day if time is a factor.

If you have no underhood skills what-so-ever (can't use a wrench at all), enlist the assistance of a handy friend and buy him a case of beer or dinner.

The dealerships charge about 1 hour of labour to do the basic installs, and up to 2 for the full 10-wire Systems.

Re: Hard Time Starting G

A grounding kit is a bunch of wires, that replace the stock ones. These wires are in the engine compartment and connected to various points. The wires in the grounding kit are thicker and better insulated and therefore supposedly will create less electronic interference between various componenets in the engine bay. I don't see how these would void your warranty. Some people will make their own grounding kits out of wires that they purchase from HomeDepot, etc. You can buy grounding kits that are fitted for your vehicle, ie. GroundingGear, which I have, Stillen, Nismo and HKS all make kits for your car. I've found that since my grounding kit was installed, the engine idle seems to be smoother and there is better throttle response. Some people will poo-poo the effect of the grounding kit, but it's a relatively inexpensive mod and it dresses up the engine bay. Its also an easy install that one could do themselves. I am mechanically useless, I had the dealer install mine during a regular service interval. My dealer sells the GroundingGear version. Good luck.

Here's a pic of my G/Kit installed. (Thick red wires).
Contact Gordgee for info. A great mod.
