My car is around 186k and took her in for service at my garage. Wanted to get your opinions on the work completed and whether there are alternative available, just so I know in the future. A 2003 G35 Sedan.

1) Valve seals were leaking, but only OEM Infiniti parts were available and they don't sell the seals on its own. Ended up costing over $700 in parts alone. Are there aftermarket seals available for cheap?

2) Transmission fluid/oil change - my mechanic told me to goto Infiniti as the car should only use OEM oil. The dealership is going to charge $170-180. Are there any alternatives?

Tranny fluid - AT, only use OEM. MT, lots of people like OEM as well or Amsoil.

Valve covers - as fair as I know, the cover and gasket are only sold as a whole unit. It's kind of retarded.

Might wanna consider doing your differential oil as well if you haven't recently.

 

Lots of mtc on our cars is DIYable. Where are you located?

 

It is automatic transmission unfortunately.

Valve seals you need to remove the cams and springs to get at them. It is a far bigger job than changing out the valve covers. Also you can get separate gaskets for the valve covers(I have two n my garage right now) but the seals around the spark plug tube are not replaceable.

OP make sure you use the OEM recommended Auto trans oil!!!! You should be able to buy it from Nissan if you want to do it yourself or have a 3rd party do it.

 

Should this be done at a dealership or is this something easy to handle that I can do at my regular garage?

 

Good point, Sylvan. I'm not entirely sure but with the seemingly more common valve covers leaking, I assumed. My mistake.

As for the diff, I haven't done it yet because I'm a professional procrastinator. But from the looks of it, seems easier and faster than changing the motor oil.
