I'm not worried about being pulled over up there. Thurfor, none of you should be as the cataclysmic noise my car emits is louder than anyones I know of here. Just have to keep it civil around most peoples ears, as said, old man driving.

i think motorcycles should be a little louder just because they are smaller and more nimble so you know they are around you. i dont think they should be obnoxiously loud, but hear able.

i think the sound bylaw is bulls**t! the man is just trying to take one more thing from us!!

I used to ride, too, starting when I was about 9. Not sure I buy the "I need to be heard to be seen" argument, in my experience I think being cut off is more a matter of the bike simply being a smaller vehicle. And I can tell you for a fact the people that ride up and down my street aren't just trying to be seen. Anyway, I didn't go to the open house tonight, too freakin' cold. I'll go to one of the next two though, I saw on the news they are showing a film to try to get people to identify how loud is too loud. Admirable, but as my wife pointed out, also flawed, since most who go to these open houses will be crabby old farts like me who think EVERYthing is too loud, LOL!

i think that also has a lot to do with it also. people that have a larger vehicles think they can do what they want on the roads. the smaller vehicle always looses!

Exactly, my cousins are riders, but they don't ride choppers they have sport bikes, let me tell you their bikes don't even come close to the noise a chopper makes, and they still manage to ride around with no problem, they actually laught when Harley/chopper bikers bring the noise excuse.

So I went to the second of three open houses tonight and put in my two cents' worth. Some of the preliminary ideas they have are actually sorta sensible. One is a photo-radar-like device that records sound levels of passing vehicles along with their license plates. The head bylaw guy was there and suggested his personal preference would be to set a couple of thresholds, one for just a bit above the acceptable level (whatever that turns out to be, let's say 90-95 dBA) where people get a ticket, but if they come back within a prescribed time and show they've remedied the noise level, the ticket's rescinded. If they're over the 'grace' threshold, then they are ticketed and if they don't pay the ticket, out goes a warrant. People could voluntarily have their vehicle checked without fear of citation.

The measurement device must be manned, a la MultaNova, but I suggested if it could be manned by citizen volunteers, they'd have to beat them off with a stick. Also, the device costs 90K but the manufacturer said if they use the device for a year they get the first one free (or something like that). Better than Edmonton's method since this way doesn't require a traffic stop.

Thoughts on all that? (I have some) Can it work?

whats with the chopper hating?? and by chopper i think you mean cruiser right. there are some good looking cruisers out there too that arent to obnoxiously loud.
its just the DB driving it!!

and ive never rode any kind of cruiser bike, always a sport or touring bike.

i think that would work better than setting up check stops for noise swivel.

I agree with that 1000%. In my hood we have lots of modded bikes and cars. Some hogs rumble by and I don't mind that at all. Others go by cracking that b1tch for all they're worth. We also have at least three 67-8-9 Camaros, two of which sound (and look!) sweet and the drivers generally behave themselves. Then we have one who gets up to speed, pushes in the clutch and coasts along repeatedly revving the ***** out of his engine. Now THAT is the kind of DB I'm talking about.
