Here's an article about the Edmonton bylaw:

Comments?? Not surprisingly, I have some thoughts on the matter. But I'll save them until I've heard from a few of you.

They're already banned here before 9:00 a.m. on weekends. That's not what this is about.

Anyone else?

Well I hope they do something about the loud straight pipe motorcycles, you can't even have lunch in the balconies of restaurants along 17ave cause it just too damn loud, specially if is a warm day, and don't get me started at night or early in the morning reving the bike till it redlines, is just not appropriate.

^that's one I could never figure out.
They tag cars all the time, but bikes (esp. Harley) are 10x worse & seem to get away with it.

wow, i thought there was no way they could reasonably enforce such a bylaw, but then I see they're actually getting digital decibel readers. Damn

^FWIW I'd make sure I know the correct testing procedure.
It makes a big difference if they test 10' away or 5'

Here's the testing procedure; it's pretty cut-and-dried.

Absolutely right. A STOCK Harley is louder than most cars with modified exhaust, even ricers with ridiculous fart cans.

Objective my a$$. A Harley with loud pipes running at 2000 rpm and no load is a hell of a lot quieter than under load at the same rpms. I say strap those malfuggers to a dyno and then test the sound...

Even the most obnoxious of car exhausts pales in comparison to the above. (IMHO, YMMV, void in certain jurisdictions...)

I think I'll keep my exhaust stock now, just keep the intakes for some snort at WOT.

I'm not worried about my car exhaust, I think most aftermarket car systems will come in well below the standard.

Reading the feedback online, you might (not) be surprised how many cry that such a bylaw tramples on their 'rights'.

I hope they bring it Sylvan, our back yard backs on to Hiway 11A and even though the speed limit is 70km/hr once people get around the bend they all need to go WOT. The Diesels and motor bikes are very annoying in the summer. just planted 6 spruce trees to try to cut the noize down a bit .
My car is very quiet all things considered so I am not worried about tickets myself.

I also do not enjoy the straight piped bikes all summer long revving the crap out of them at every chance possible as if they sound amazing or something. South park did a great piece on this topic earlier in the season actually. Big lifted diesel trucks are also contributors of this though as they must accellerate at WOT at every light to make sure they can create the biggest clouds of soot.

Yeah, so there, Gord!

I'll probably go to one of the open houses tomorrow night if the weather's not too bad, put in my two cents' worth.
