Just go to set alerts.... Then click instant messaging and look for bbm. Then change alert for group messages. That's how it works for the 9700, not sure what bb you got.

 

There is not a 'per group' setting. I need group notifications to be on for other work related BBM groups. Unfortunately we cannot specify different notification settings (ie on/off) for specific groups.
