Hey, Bill +1 for the Harmony remotes.
I've had one for a few years now, still working great.
Make sure you log into their website & download the latest flash update.
The latest updates really improve the setup capabilities.

How did I miss this thread, lol.
I've had the Logitech 880 for over 5 years and it still works great, runs a 20year old Panasonic CD player I have to everything else I have ever bought to date.
The original battery still holds a charge for over a week too. They are great!

The Harmony remotes are OK if you want to DIY, and they're really reasonably priced, but they're kinda flimsy and IR only.
When I put my system together a couple years ago I sprung for a Genesis MX-900 remote. It was pricy (about $450) but it's built like a tank and works great. It uses RF rather than IR, so it even passes the "big fuzzy blanket" test. The downside is that you really can't program it yourself - it cost me $200 for in home programming, but updates are free.

Same remotes I run throughout my house... I've got HD to all of my TV's but the HD boxes all sit in a central location in the bsmt... As you said, the downside is they're extremely tough to program on your own (you actually cant get the software, it has to come from an authorized dealer).
I'll throw in another vote for Harmony, I run a Harmony One in my theatre room and it does a decent job for the price. I still prefer my URC Genesis remotes but they're quite a bit more expensive because they can do just about everything (control lights, blinds, b-in audio systems, just about anything with an IR code)...
