Are you headed to Cape Breton during your east coast trek? If so obviously the Cabot Trail is a must. I found the towns of Baddeck and Cheticamp to be very nice as well. Cheticamp is directly on the Cabot Trail and Baddeck is only about 15 minutes from the trail entrance.

Any plans on visiting NB or PEI?

Btw, my daughter is only four.
