That is pretty ingenious Ian. If you can DIY it for less than $150 it makes total sense. I will say that I actually have a sun gun and I rarely use it since I picked up a couple tactical lights... so another alternative for those looking to find swirls may be to check out some fenix lights; in particular the ones in the ~300-450 lumen range (less isn't bright enough, more washes out the surface). I find my TK21 at low setting (380 lumens) is perfect for finding RIDs, holograms, light swirls etc in just about any environment. A TK21 is like $90 too, so not too expensive.
The only downside is the CRI (the way they represent color) is much lower than a sun gun. So while they find swirls better, ime, they do distort the color of the surface. A sun gun is CDI 94 or 95 I think (100 being perfect color representation), and the fenix lights are in the 86 range.
