Buying wheels from the states
Hey, i'm planning on buying wheels and getting them shipped from socal to canada.
My dilemma is whether i should get it shipped to my door or shipped to the border and which shipping company i should ask my seller to use.
I live about 7 hours away from the border and don't know if i'll be saving that much money as i would spend a bunch on gas/food/hotel.
Basically i need to know if i should get it shipped to my door or not and which company i should go with to save the most money if i do.
Any help will be appreciated... thanks

Depends what you're looking for, but places like Tirerack have prearranged brokerage fees.
When you go throught the checkout, they calculate the brokerage up front.

I've read about shipping them with fedex and then going to the airport and paying for my tax or something?
Would that be fedex freight? if not then what would be the difference between that and normal fedex shipping?
Thefinalcost.com calculated that brokerage would be 80 dollars? Does that seem right because it seems kind of low.

It has been awhile since I have bought wheels, but I think you pay shipping+duty+GST+brokerage. So it all depends on how much the wheels cost initially. I found it to still be much cheaper than buying locally. Unless you live in Lethbridge get them shipped to your door. Like other said Tirerack pre calculates it other wise make sure you have about 10-15% to pay fees just to be sure you can cover it.

I have never acted as my own broker and wouldn't have a clue how, but wouldn't air shipping them negate the money you save by brokering your self? I have never looked into so I don't know. I guess for me I will spend a couple hundred to get them to my door instead of the hassel, time, parking at the airport and gas running around trying to get them in the end I am not sure your savings would be that big unless you have a lot of free time.
A quick search looks like $1,600-5,000 is $80 in brokerage fees.

While that's more geared towards Toronto, it still applies though you'll need to find your local CBSA office.
TL
R version:
You can clear the item at any CBSA office if the goods are less than $1600.
If it's more, you'll have to go to the port of entry, which most likely is at the border since it's a ground shipment. This negates the whole purpose of clearing the item yourself....

If brokerage fees are about 80 dollars that should mean i'm paying more for shipping and an extra 80 for brokerage? Or is there some other fees that i'll be missing because if it's only 80 bucks extra i'd get it shipped to my door in a heartbeat lol.
Basically if you ship anything ground you pay on top of the goods:
Shipping, gst, duties, brokerage.
When you go to the border to clear the item, you save yourself brokerage and sometimes even duties, depending on how lazy the CBSA agents are. Most of time you only pay gst.
If you bring back the items from the states, you save on shipping (since there are many free shipping offers in US48) but you will still pay taxes unless you plan to smuggle it or make a fake kijiji ad/invoice etc...
