Need Help Please Regarding DRL
Hello there,
I have owned a 2004 G35 Coupe for about 4 years now and have frequented this forum quite often. I can happily say that I've never had to make a post about an issue because the community here is so great and informative that I usually find what I need right away.
Today I'm in a bit of a pickle, I'm a Canadian and have recently moved provinces from Alberta to Saskatchewan. I am required to do a vehicle safety inspection which I had done this morning in fact and it failed for a few reasons, I'll only go over the ones relevant to the lighting.
As long as I've had this car, the DRL have never worked 100% of the time. When the light stick is in the 'Off' position they will come on if the lighting is dim but if it's bright out they turn off. The HID's work perfectly whenever in 'Auto' and the high beams from the dual filament bulbs work all the time as well. I noticed a few days ago that my right high beam was no longer working and the same with the on/off DRL so I went to change my bulb. Sure enough the bulb was burnt and I replaced it but still no luck on the DRL.
I have read a few posts on here about ways to troubleshoot this but if I'm completely honest I'm not the best when it comes to automotive electrical, dumbing it down would be greatly appreciated. A lot of the older posts also no longer have pictures available so that makes it difficult for me to follow along.
In short the issue I'm having is that in the 'Off' position the DRL do not come on, and when they do it's only the driver side bulb, but both bulbs work in the high beam. I have come to understand that they are wired in unison but I cannot figure out why one works and not the other. The other thing I've noticed is the one working light does not actually get dimmer or brighter between DRL/high beam even though I've read that it should be dimming down to about half power.
Lastly my second question goes out to any Canadian drivers that might be familiar with the law on tinted windows as I can't find a conclusive answer on any government sites. My car has been registered in Alberta and B.C. in the past and I have never had a problem in regards to my tail lights which are apparently slightly tinted. I had my inspection done at Canadian Tire and they said that I need to either peel the tint off or replace the casing on both tail lights and side markers. The gentleman I bought my car from said he didn't make any modifications for aesthetics besides dipping the rims black and I was lead to believe he was the first owner so I'm not sure what the case might be.
I have been given two days to make a decision on this and fix it otherwise I cannot renew my vehicle next month and will no longer be able to drive. The quote that I was given for all needed services came over $1200.
Thank you all for your help, all feedback is greatly appreciated!

Check out this thread regarding your DRL. I just did this fix to my sedan and it worked out great.
I had similar problems with my DRL on the passenger side and eventually the drivers side too.
Also I disassembled the front bumper and removed my headlight assembly. I found a wire was worn in half. That was causing my HID light not to work...simple fix. re-solder the connections together and voila!!!
Sorry I don't have any suggestions about the tinted tail lights.
