ztube with or without K&N drop-in filter??

Cdn Tire has K&N filters at 20% off!! What do you think? Is the K&N worth its money performance wise? Or should I just stick with the stock filter with my ztube?

It's hard to say if K&N air filter is good or not. It has a better air flow, but it not a good filteration. The reason why ppl think K&N is good because it is good in the marketing... like advertise big time.. but it is not the best to filtering the dust as much as the stock filter.

I tend to agree with you....
I've used K&N in the past & there is no doubt some gains to be had... but at what cost.
I decided to stay with stock this time for better protection.

If you check Bob is the Oil Guy they did some air flow tests that show more dirt does get through.

Mattau....I agree with the others, I had a K&N panel filter on my last car but decided against it this time because I felt it is not all it's cracked up to be. I would rather just replace my filter yearly and leave it in the stock housing which I feel is well designed anyway. So I went with the z-tube only and left the stock filter there.

OH oh. I just put a K&N in my car a few weeks ago. The Z tube goes on next week. I hope you guys aren't saying it's not healthy for the motor allowing too much dirt in. I used one years ago on my 5.2 l dakota and found it made more power and helped the p___ poor mileage on that thing.

It really boils down to personal pref....
Never heard of anyone with problems resulting from a K&N.
If there was, word would get out pretty quickly

Enjoy.... there are def some benefits.
Make sure you don't over oil;
You don't want the oil to get back to the MAF (it's right behind the filter)

inTgr8r, I read the article and it seems the K&N has some benefit but not much. As for economic value, it's not a one time expense either since you need to get the oil and clearner kit to clean the filter periodically. And on top of that, it doesn't sounds like the air filter is the easiest thing to remove/replace. hmmm... I am really leaning towards staying with the stock filter.

Is there some hard proof that the K&N doesn't filter dust as good as a stock? I just bought a K&N for my '05 and I don't want to hurt it.

Anyone have some additional info on this? (Besides the "Bob the oil guy" site)

Thanks Ian. That's good advice on the oiling that GSM also gave me. I haven't bought the cleaning/ re oilng kit yet but I'll be careful when it needs to be done.
These mods are like everything else. There is probably some very small gains but most of it is pyschological and felt only in a butt dyno.

K&Ns are recognised as acceptable by every major manufacturer, and are not considered to void a warrantee. The filter is not difficult to access. Undo the bolt on the right side of the airbox (as you face it from the front; driver's side). Even with the Z tube, which is not as flexible as the G bafflebox (my condescending term for the power robbing monstrosity between the MAF and the butterfly), you will have plenty of movement to insert or remove the filter. I also take off the power duct, just to see what I'm doing. And lift up a bit, popping the airbox from it's tab below. Honestly, it's a piece of cake.
I had the Ztube and K&N on my '03, and installed the same on my '05 in less than 20 minutes. With the Ztube, the most important things are to be sure to fit the lip fully on the front, (pull it flush forward til it won't go any further all around, then tighten the clamp) and secondly, be sure to route the vacuum hose in such a manner as to not have it folded. You will know it's folded (like a garden hose when you want to quickly stop the flow of water) if you hear a high pitched whistle under WOT. Re-route more tube back towards the firewall if this is the case.
Folks said the 05 6MT is quieter than the 03. I agree with this- I'm turning 40 in less than a month, and even I long for a little more "song" from the VQ. These very minor mods help for sure in that respect.

Thumbs up

I just got the Z tube on today with the K&N already on. It was a bright sunny day and the mods inspired me to do something bad. I went out to find a deserted secondary road and left some very long strips of rubber out there.
I love the sound of the Z tube anywhere over 2800 especially 4k and up, and the throttle response seems better too.

Great mods. One of my favourite along with the Borla exhaust on my coupe. Enjoy.
