Question Oil Analysis

Is anyone doing oil analysis on their G?

I know Blackstone Labs do this in the US & there are
a few members using them.

Apparently Blackstone can do Canadian samples (via mail)
Just though I'd try to locate a service in Canada.

I found Wearcheck in Mississauga, but it looks like they have a more fleet/commercial orientation??
I requested info but never heard back.

Anyone know of any other Canadian services?

Yes try Fluidlife Fluidlife

I use them in Edmonton and I believe they have a lab in Brantford and they do have a mail service available.

Yeh Ian, Looks like the FluidLife is moving to Brantford from Birlington. LOL, that place will be practically in my backyard.....

I may have to contact them myself since they're so close. Would be nice to know what's happening inside the engine.

When I find any info, I'll post here.

Thanks for the tip, G35 6MT.
Bro, what about the meet on the 24th. to make up for the 3rd?--- UPDATED MEET THREAD

Guys, I've fired off an email to the Brantford facility for info. I'll post when I get the reply.

The facility is within a few blocks of the Nissan dealer I'm familiar with. (Brantford Nissan).

The way it was set up for me:

Pick a package of tests you want performed on the oil. (a couple of options)

Determine "how many" sample bottles you wish to purchase. Basically, if you buy more sample bottles, the cheaper the cost/test.

They have either a "mail the results service" or "access to your results on-line." So far, the tests I've had done, are informative and believable, plus very quick analyst result times.

Sounds cool bro. I'm waiting to hear back from our local lab for info on their programs available here.
I hope it's as comprehensive as what you have out there.

Can you share details of programs and costs? TNX.

Just got some info from Fluid Life.
Hello Ian.

Thank you for your interest in Fluid Life for your oil analysis requirements. Unfortunately, I did not receive the attachment report from Blackstone, so I'll have to assume which testing you were interested in. A common test for automotive or basic applications is our Series 1 test, while a lot of industrial customers use our Series 4A test, which offers a more comprehensive analysis of both the oil, the machine, and the environment. Please see the following:

Series 1 test (Automotive test package) $17.50 (Individual sample) or $150.00 per case of 10
Includes the following tests:
-ICP Spectrometry (wear metal analysis)
-Viscosity @ 40 & 100 deg C
-Water contamination - crackle test method
-Fuel, Glycol, % soot contamination (engines only)

Sample results are typically done on the following day we recieve them in the lab. We also offer multiple methods of retrieving results, such as email, website access, software, mail, or fax. If you are interested in pursuing this further, I have attached a credit application for setting up new accounts. In the meantime, please feel free to visit our website (www.fluidlife.com) or call me directly for more information on our services.

Best Regards,

Mark Shierman,
The Fluid Life Corporation
95 Copernicus Blvd.
Brantford, ON
N3P 1N4
Cost looks very good... & less expensive than Blackstone.
Here is a sample report & Marks e-mail

If I can remember from my research ....... and that is a stretch lately

I compared Fluidlife's analytical sheet to Blackstones and found them very similiar in tests performed on the Series 1.

If a member has a corporate account and is willing to start a group purchase, I'm sure the costs can be lower. The downside is that their is only one mailing address per group purchase.

I agree..
I also went through a Blackstone report & found them very similar.
The FL report format is good, with colour coding & charting.
Fluid Life also has a good online tool "my lab" which stores your historical data.

I have 3 vehicles to track, so....
I ordered a case of 10 sample bottles which works out to $15 each plus mailing.... pretty hard to beat.
(plus they're in Canada)

I'm glad you heard back from them Ian.....I've not heard yet, but I sent last Wednesday, so maybe they'll answer this week.
The cost sounds reasonable for the series 1, and at $150 for 10 -- that's even better.
I think for me, I'll go in with others on a 10-pack since I'd use maybe 3 or 4 per year.
We'll have to get a group together perhaps and have one guy register..maybe he can have a free sample for dispersing the other's info.
Thanks for posting.-- Deane survived the Boston.....and did well. Check out the thread I posted guys and congratulate Deane on a pretty tough race.

Hi Bro, I wondered if you yourself are in a group for oil sampling and how is it working out for info transfer etc.

TIA
Colin.

I have my own account and maintain two vehicles. So I figure I would use up 10 bottles in no time.

Yeh the box of 10 is ideal if you have more than 1 ride; with 2, you'd go thru most of them within a year.
I'll canvas at our next meet to see who's interested. I'm sure there are a few anyway.

It would be cool to know what's happening inside the engine and to compare results.

I agree, lets compare! I'll start with mine.

My last oil analyst on the G, turned up some interesting results. They were all screwed up because I didn't have the engine at operating temp, so it showed 1.3% fuel contamination. Plus the oil was in desire need of changing after only 4,000 km?????? Viscositys @ 40 & 100C were toast.

That is one of the reasons, I'm switching to a synthetic oil. The result showed a elevated level of copper (engine still breaking in?) and silicon (air filter needs changing) I've installed a K&N filter with a Z-tube since. These are some things I'll be watching out for. I'm also changing my brand of oil filter to a the larger Baldwin filter(B1402) Plus I may just change the filter after 2500km and see how that works out. Depending on how dirty the oil looks, I just may have a sample done at that point as well.

Lots of things to do and watch for ......
