Oil Change Upgrade

Has anyone used any other oil and filter other than the dealer's?

I'm thinking of upgrading my oil and filter, but I have yet to find a good option for our cars.

Does anyone have any experiences or ideas?

Thanks.

Hey Chico, (mr. 20's)
Many of us have switched to synthetic if you haven't already. You'll want to have your car well broken in like 5000km or so firstif it's not there now. I use mobil 1 5-30 synthetic and the factory nissan filter with the steel end caps (larger of two sizes available) but am switching to a mobil 1 filter on my next change. As well there has been good feedback on switching rear diff fluid to synthetic.

LOL Mr 20s.... I think we have a new handle for Chico

Yup ^^WHS^^
I use Amsoil myself, but just get a first line product Mobil 1, redline etc.
Just stay away from synth blends etc.

NAPA Gold has excellent ratings I was going to check them out myself.
If you use the Nissan, use the 9E000 used by the Maxima (larger than G35 spec)

& def do the rear dif; I serviced mine after 10K & was shocked @ the amount of grey crud that came out
Feel much better with some new synth in there.

LOL...that's funny...I like that handle actually "MR20's"!

Thanks for the feed back guys. I did hear about mobil before but wanted to check if anyone here had changed over yet.

Here is another question...how many litres do our sedans take? The guys at the dealership says 4 to 5 litres. Does that make sense?

And did you guys notice the difference in the ride? does it run smoother now?

Thanks.

Chico, glad you enjoyed the new handle.
I've changed mine 3 times myself now and car takes about 4.5 litres of oil.
The rear diff takes about 1.25 litres.

I think the car free wheels a little better now and mileage has improved slightly but I haven't had the chance to track it consistently.
Biggest change I noticed was in my 6mt when I went to synthetic. It helped with reduced notchiness and less vibration through stick. However there does seem to be a warm up period of a minute or two when the shifting seems even more stiff.

Manual calls for 4.7liters. or 5 quarts.

Nice thing about Amsoil, it comes in quarts.
5 fill to the line perfectly with no piddly bits left over.

One thing to keep in mind, if you have 5AT.

Do NOT change the trany oil.
You will void your warrantee with anything other than Nissan auto trany oil.
It's rumoured to be synth anyway.

Thanks guys...very good info. I will change over next week when my oil change is due.

By the way...I usually take it to my mechanic for any custom stuff...so how much does the oil and filter cost?

My mechanic is a good guy...but I have to keep him honest.

Filter lists for $11.49. I paid $9.76 since I am a member of a Z club that gets me 15% off at Nissan dealer. Oil was $24.57 at Walmart.

Get the diff done too. 2 litres of synthetic will run you about $20-35 depending on brand.

Ok..I spoke to my mechanic and his price is within a couple of bucks. But now I have another question.

He mentioned "ROYAL PURPLE" synthetic oil. He highly recommends it and tells me I will be very happy. He uses the same oil in some race cars that he works on and other top end cars.

Anybody ever heard of this oil? Any comments?

Thanks.

It is expensive and hard to find to replace wherever you may need some where ever you are. Plus I wonder just what his commision is on Royal Purple vs a proven oil product.

Go with Mobil-1 as it's good and available

If you really want the best synthetic oil use Castrol Syntec 0W-30/40 made in Germany.

I got all this info and more at
Oil info and more forum

My personal selection to what oil I will use for my personal vehicles is one simple rule. If they do ANY advertising on the product, it's not worth buying. The only exception is I use Mobil-1 because I know it's good and reasonably priced.

I prefer to use products that are intended for fleet commercial heavy duty service offered by major oil companys that spend more money on research and development and proven realibility than what any other oil product will spend on any advertising.

In simple words of advise. Stay away from any single oil product like Royal Purple and that red junk too and stick with known major oil company products like Mobil-1. You'll never be disappointed.

Flame suit on

ROFLMAO

Love the sense of humour G35 6MT

It doesn't look like you need that suit though as we've pretty well left you alone!
That flame suit was absolutely hilarious intgr8r.
