We stopped with the front plates probably about 15 years ago.

My neighbour was stopped for not having a front plate. He told the officer he hadn't noticed it was missing. He was told to get one but got no ticket because the officer told him it would be impossible to prove he knew it was missing and did not replace it. It could have fallen off scant moments before or been stolen. Friendly officer, eh.

Just saw this thread in a search. I think this information is still accurate.

Newfoundland----YES
Nova Scotia------YES
P.E.I.--------------NO
New Brunswick---YES
Quebec-----------NO
Ontario-----------YES
Manitoba----------YES (on newly issued plates, no on older plates (older than 97))
Saskatchewan----YES
Alberta------------NO
British Columbia--YES
Yukon ----------- NO
NWT/Nunavut-----NO

I live in Ontario and don't have a front plate. Maybe I will get ticketed, maybe I won't. I'm not putting a plate on.

When I had mine come off in a car wash, it was about a month before I got my warning.
That only came when I was stopped for another issue
I decided not to push my luck & put it back on.

hehehe...
I'd love to come up with a motorized unit that would flip my OEM filler piece (sedan) with the push of a button.

BTW, do you know how much the fine is if you get ticketed?

I'd love one of those too, but I think if I knew how to do that I would just put rockets in my car...

And the fine is $110 last I checked.

At a driving thing I took a couple of weeks ago there was a fellow there with a Porsche who's front plate was a sticker. He said he took the plate to a printer who scanned it and made him this thick sticker which avoided any drilling. He had trimmed it down to the bare minimum size and says the cops have looked at it twice and not cared - the plate info being accurate is their only concern. Added benefit - impervious to photo radar.
