Hi! New to the forum. In the market for a used G35C and just wondering has anyone bought the car in the states and shipped it to Canada?

Is it worth it? Is there stuff you have to do to make it "Canadian"? (i.e DRL)

From what I can see, in the states it's a bit cheaper than here in Canada.

Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome bro, and good luck with your search of a new G35.

From what I've heard, importing a ride from south of the border is mired in red tape, politics, difficulties. Apparantly the requirements are different for different countries making it impractical to do so.

Wow, that bad? I have been researching the S2K for a while and know what to do to import that specific car to Canada and lots of other people have done it too. But now I want a G35 and dunno if there is any difference. Most of the info can be found at riv.ca and the G is an canadian approved car to import... but I dunno if there is any catch.

Does anyone know if Infiniti will honor the warrenty if I import it? Honda wouldn't.

 

I was going to import my '03 coupe when I moved to Ontario from California - the red tape and import costs were so over the top I sold it, took a loss, and bought a sedan after I moved. It isn't worth it.

 

May I ask how much did you have to pay for all that if you were going to go through it?

 

The rules are really complex, but to give you a break down this is how I was told it would work.

1) Cars imported from the U.S built in the U.S don't pay duty, however cars imported from the U.S built in Japan are subject to a 6.1% customs/duty fee.

2) You pay GST, so 7% on top of the cars value + the duty fee.

3) $100 for any car with A/C

4) $182 registration of imported vehicles fee (RIV) for every province but Quebec, where it is (I think) $197.

5) lastly, you need to have Canadian insurance in place.

The value of the car is determined by Canadian customs and is usually a Kelley Blue Book value. For my car they valued it at $36,900, so the total import cost with fees would have been about $5300 USD plus registering it here in Ontario, getting a mandatory emissions test ($225 or so), plates blah blah.. It was about $6k all said and done.

I was able to sell it and take a loss of less than that, so that's what I did.

As an aside, while the actual costs aren't *that* bad, the amount of time it takes to do all this is a little excessive. There is a lot of upfront paperwork that you have to do before you get to the border. Here is a page I used that helped me when I was deciding.

warranty will not be honoured. i even had problems with my acura when i was studying in south carolina. had to get a bunch of paperwork from school stating that i was in the country temporarily as a visitor. the dealership even took an engine block number off my car (why? i have no clue). my biggest gripe would be getting stuck with those big fat MPH and fahrenheit numbers on the dash.

 

You warranty wasn't honoured in Canada on a car imported from the U.S? Weird - I checked into that when I was going to import mine and was told by Infiniti that it would be honoured. Well, one more thing to make sure of if you decide to do it, psychoblur.

Just called infiniti and they will honor warrenty all over North America.

 

what number did u call? my friend moved up to toronto from chicago last year... he has an fx35 and they will not do any warranty work on his vehicle. he's had a problem with his driver's seat shifting but they refuse to do the work for free. any help would be appreciated.

I actually just called one of the dealerships here in Edmonton. But maybe I'll try that number u posted Gsedanman

 

gse thanks. he just called the customer service number on the back of his manual (i'm assuming it was the u.s. one). they basically told him that he needs to submit his work visa in order to get service done on his vehicle. he asked why the hassle .. apparantly they told him there used to be a problem with people bringing cars in from canada at cheaper prices and then selling them (probably shady used car dealers). they claim that any car that is purchased cross border automatically has it's warranty voided. she said currently this is the practice in the u.s., but was unsure about canada's situation. psychoblur.. u must have a good dealer down there, because he's been to 3 dealers here (woodchester, 401-dixie, alta) and none of them would service his suv under warranty. he's gonna fax his work visa over to customer service and apparantly they're gonna contact the dealership directly to set-up and appointment for him. i would call the canadian customer service number and inquire with them as to what the deal is.
