Brake Wear, How long should they last?

How long should the brakes last on a new car before needing any service? My car has 13000kms and I think the front brakes need to be serviced already. I find it hard to believe that a $50k car has brakes on it that wear that quickly. I know I drive pretty fast most of the time but that's 75% highway and I am not heavy on the brakes.

My G is new as well, so I'm not a good reference for the G, but my 2k2 Maxima went 80,000kms before I changed the front and 110,000kms for the rear. The Maxima was a 6 speed, my G is auto, so I'm interested in seeing the difference as well. I also drive about 80% + highway.

This being said, when I had Hawk race pads on my 94 Z28, they wore out before I got the VISA bill

Here's to hoping that the brakes last a long time on the G, but thinking real hard about this tells me that I'll be lucky to see that kind of mileage. The G has great brakes and something has to give.

Sounds a little early to me...
I had about 17000 when I upgraded to the Racing Brake rotors, SS lines etc.
The OEM still had more than 50% left.

Peter we have 25,000 KM on our 05, I'm taking the car in for servicing this week and they are checking the brakes (part of 24,000km service) and replacing the head unit on our cd unit. The brakes on the X are a bit smaller than yours though. I'll let you know what they say. Have not had any complaints about ours so far.

I've only got about 14k on mine and they're fine. I had a look at them in the shop a while ago and still lots of pad wear left.

I've got a little over 82,000 KMs now and I've had the fronts changed three times and the rear are due for a second change. I can look into my service records on when they were changed if you like.

Wow! That's pretty disappointing. What year is your G? I understand that the 05 brakes are different (except X), so hopefully brake wear is something that has been corrected.

Is your G auto or stick? Hwy vs city driving???

Thanks.

My front rotors/pads were gone at 32k km. I'm the 2nd owner of this coupe so I'm not positive on how the car was "driven". Costed me $2500 to have them replaces at the stealership. Won't make the same mistake.

Looks like the Admins on this forum took disabled signatures. Ya, it's a MY03 M6 Sport Package (with brembo's).

To be fair, I do track the car.. but still to go at 32k km really blows. No more track events for me..

2 things guys...

1) The 03/04 G's have had a history of brakes wearing down too fast, look into some stillen metal matrix pads, or some hawk street use pads...I heard these last longer, squeal less, and create less brake dust. And don't take your car to the stealer, take it to a less expensive brake shop.

2) Your braking habits might have something to do with it, are you riding your brakes? Meaning do you tend to lightly depress the brake pedal a lot? This will cause a lot of excess brake wear...if you want to break be sure to be firm on them...using light pressure is just going to sand them down.

Which events do you do? Just did my 12th event this season last Friday and I've only seen one other G around.

Sorry about the sigs everyone.....but the issue is up in the air right now since so many sigs have gotten so large and too far out of hand.
It's been decided that, just for the time being, that all sigs are temporarily withdrawn until a new directive and sig limit can be effected.
The issue is likely to be rectified shortly, and many thanks for everyone's patience.

Urabus, -- that $2500 sounds a bit absorbidant even tho the brakes are Brembo. YIKES....

Colin.

$2500? Wow, I'm going to try and baby those brakes of mine then.

I've got a 2003 Auto. As MikeyMike said, these brakes were prone to wearing very quickly. In my first 2 years of ownership I've did about 65% Highway driving. Now it's mostly city driving, with the occasional trip to Ottawa.

If my memory serves me correctly, the first change was done at about 32,000 KMs and the service manager told me that I'm surprised you got that much out of them. A lot of others have come in early than you! From what I have heard, they have improved the brake wear significantly now.

Yorkville wanted $650.00 + tax for just the rear brakes on my sedan. I told them to take my car off the hoist!
