Guns!

What's with all the shootings and guns these days in and around Toronto?

I see this evening on the news (Global) that more and more people now are thinking of arming themselves for protection.

......which means even more guns.

.. What's it like for you guys who live there and have to live with this daily?

Colin.

That sounds to me like so many of the big US cities which have developed a reputation for crime, violence and murder. A vigilante state where people have to carry guns to protect themselves. That's scary. I hope it's not really that bad.

Most of what you see in the news happens in certain neighbourhoods where most of these thugs in gangs live. It's not across the city in the general public.

Seems that the intersection of Jane and Finch comes up quite often...
Might be wise to stay away from there...

We would welcome you with open arms. I would have someone closer to help with these G projects.

I am originally from Toronto and made my way across the country, overseas and finally ended up here.

Well, it's not so bad. I just don't look anyone in the eye when I'm out now. Keep your head down.

if you live in a society where you can't look at someone directly, that is BAD...i moved from toronto and some of my patients are canadian, we keep a close eye on the toronto star and outside looking in; toronto is not as appealing to me as it used to be....and im a die hard torontonian, i just dont like the way crime has run rampant over the last five years...when i visit i never bring the G, always rent a car. you just never know nowadays

I live in Mississauga, but work in Toronto (at the Eaton Centre). No problems down here, but have had one or two shootings that I can remember in this area. It's getting ridiculous on what's going on, and now residents are saying we should arm ourselves too for protection. That logic does not make sense to me. Colin, your right, that just means more and more guns on the street.

I have not changed my lifestyle or the way I act, I go on with my own business.

Every major city faces this problem, but it up to law enforcement on how they handle it. In the 90's, living in NY, Rudy brought out major law enforcements out in the public, and cracked down heavily with steeper sentences, lawlessness started to curb. It didn't disappear, but become a deterent. You could ride the subways again, without the fear of getting raped, mugged or shot. Our law enforcements have to come up with a solutions cuz this summer and the continued shootings is a clear indication that things are out of hand.

I've lived in Toronto my entire life and it sure has changed and not for the better. Having said that, I still like the city and don't mind living here. I don't know if I'll feel the same way 5 years from now if things don't improve. I know where the bad areas are and I stay away from them. I've worked downtown for many years and have not had any problems. Like PDT, I have not changed my lifestyle or what I do. However, I think the laws have to be made a lot tougher so that people who commit gun crimes are suitably punished. As for having guns as protection, I'm sure there are some who feel that way. I don't, and no one I know would do that. That's not the solution.

I see what you mean, Shane........When dealing with strangers, one should think nowadays b4 getting into, say, a simple argument, or 'responding' to road rage or the like.

Thinking about it now, I would say the difficulty would be if you were involved in a car accident (heaven forbid, but sh*t happens). Now you're in the midst of an issue where emotions can be pretty high :
IE-- Ahhhh, my freakin G, you SOB.....GRRRRR

In other situations, tho, looking away and leaving would be the thing to do -- and just chalk it up to that old adage: "Discretion is the better part of Valour".

/my random rambling.

it's getting pretty hairy in t.o. ... that's why i picked up one of these used:

now i can cruise the city without any worries. visibility and gas mileage really sucks but it does have the 'bling' with some new rims.

seriously though... they really need to change our archaic legal system. only in canada can a murderer walk out of jail after only a few years. add to that the pedophiles and drug dealers and we've got some really great neighbourhoods. the majority of these street thugs are getting away scott free and it sending a really bad message to continue their practices. i also agree that jane and finch is a disaster area. driving by it it almost looks like the hood these days. these people have no appreciation over human life and will shoot a guy for something as stupid as picking their nose the wrong way. although some will argue that it's gangs vs gangs that are dying ... there are a great deal of innocent bystanders being affected now as well. to be honest, i'd rather see stun guns imposed with the same rules as hand guns and have all hand guns banned from major metropolitan city limits. we as a society should be on a path towards a more civilized society. i don't see hand guns of any stature falling into that category. unless your hunting squirrels on bay street i really don't see the purpose.

On the news this morning they said that a bunch of teenagers roughed up a bus driver because they got on the wrong bus, and somehow that was the driver's fault. This was at Bloor and West Mall I think. Unbelievable. Hopefully the cameras that they are thinking of installing in buses and subways will be somewhat of a deterrent.
