UPS does charge higher amounts for Duty and Brokerage. I've heard that FedEx, DHL and other carriers are not as high as UPS. You can try with them.

Shipper said only UPS, but said he'll mark the value as whatever I want and it is being marked as a gift.

They said they ship stuff to Canada every day without problem, but marking an exhaust at $60US just seems to be too much of a red flag.

Maybe I'll suggest $500.

Try getting them to mark it as "Warranty Repair/Return - no charge" or something of that sort.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea.

[QUOTE=eledin]Is UPS our only method of getting things across the border into Canada? At least as it relates to oversized items like exhaust systems?QUOTE]

FedX also .... my experience is you're gonna have a hard time side stepping GST or VAT - whichever one it is.

Would FedEx be cheaper? FedEx can be used for oversized items?

I've used both for different things and they are basically the same thing in freight charges, transit times & brokerage fees. Duties and taxes are imposed by the government not them. In short they are just a few dollars difference between the two. It's just your preference.

If you want to save money tell them you want to do the clearance yourself. It will save you the brokerage and disbursement fees to the government but not the taxes.

Tell who?

How would I go about doing the clearance myself?

UPS or whoever you choose to bring it in. They will hold it at their depot in Canada, hand over the paperwork to you and tell you where the Canada Customs office is. Then you go with the paperwork and ID, pay the taxes and duties if applicable, they will stamp it CLEARED and you're done. I normally have the customs officer fax it to the carrier from their office, then the carrier will deliver the goods or you can pick it up.

Overland Express might be worth a try.
I know that they will handle oversize and do the
Customs clearance, probably cheaper than UPS.

I'm sure it will. It's just a matter of what it's going to cost, but it's coming. I'm looking forward to it too.

I'm in for the meets.
