Never have to wax your car?
Has infiniti told anybody else this- that with what they do to their vehicles, there's no need to wax it, and if you do, it'll remove their protection they put on?
i don't know if they're gona give me this line with the coupe, but they gave my dad that line when he bought the I30.
Does anybody know wtf this 'special protection' is?

Sounds like the "teflon coating" they can apply. I don't think it does anything for the shine, but it's supposed to protect against acidic particles (bird droppings) from eating through the paint. Sounds like hockus pockus to me, but since they offered it at a discounted price and it has a 5 year warranty, I went with the deal. I basically see it as a warranty on the paint. I'm taking my sedan in for it's 15k check up this week, I will ask if waxing is harmful for the teflon.

Re: Never have to wax your car?
yeah, i got that protectant too.. i decided to add it cuz it wasn't that expensive for one, and the fact that you get the protectant added and a detail done to your car every 6 months until the warranty is up.. 2 details a year for 5 years didn't sound too bad to me.. detailing can run $50-100 depending on the level of detail you get. i thought it was a nice way to pamper my car for less.. plus it adds incentive for me to go and get the detail since i paid for it.
i don't know what happens if you wax on top of the coating..

What's "not that expensive," exactly? I ask, because A) that teflon stuff comes in a bottle for $15, and B) even DuPont states that they have no data showing that teflon actually helps protect car paint.

Re: Never have to wax your car?
I agree that it sounds like a marketing ploy, but I figured that if it came with a warranty, it was worth the price of admission, kind of like insurance. Even if it's bogus, I have the warranty. That was of course before I found this site and all the helpful detailing tips. If I knew how much I would enjoy taking care of my baby, I would have thought twice.
Also, for complete interior and exterior treatment, it was $500. If you think I got suckered, please keep it to yourself.

Re: Never have to wax your car?
Here's my take on it. Years ago, I was a car detailer at a couple of different dealerships in Southern Cal.
One place I worked, El Cajon Mitsubishi, sold this stuff they called "Diamite". It was a dealer add on. They charged the customers $500 for this "teflon paint sealant".
As a detailer, I was asked to 'treat' a number of cars with it.
Basically, it was a mini bottle of stuff that looked, felt, and smelled like "Nu Finish". The claim on the bottle was that it was good for five years (yeah right)!
Turns out that my mom bought a car from there after I had moved on. An '86 Cordia demo, that coincidentally, I had put the Diamite on.
Typically, the little bottle would do like two cars. The parts guys gave us a bottle for every car. A typical application used about half a bottle, so all the detailers had bottles of the stuff laying around.
What a joke. $500 for a 45 minute wax job. We always got a laugh when orders came in for Diamite.
Long story short, the Cordia stayed in our family till '96. The paint still looked pretty good. But I think it had more to do with me waxing it twice a year than anything else.
I bought my Integra new in '96 and opted not to get that with the car. Waxing twice a year has kept it looking pretty good, and I haven't kept it in a garage.
That $500 treatment might cost the dealer $20 - $30 including the labor to apply it.

Re: Never have to wax your car?
Wow, if that's basically what Infiniti is doing now, that's a major hosing. I'm glad I read this thread, cause my G is on the way, and I'll know now if they offer that to me when it gets here.
