The foam applicators that come in a 3-pack are great. They may set you back a whopping $2.00 dollars though.

Some like to use MF applicators (think foam applicators covered in open thread microfiber), I find this a little more difficult to spread evenly than a regular foam applicator. I guess this also depends on whether you're using liquid or paste wax.

A ROB with either a terry cloth or MF bonnet, it gives a nice thin layer.

You'll probably find the foam applicators or pads (for PC's) easier and more economical. They tend to absorb and waste less then the microfiber or terry app's.
As for pastes vs. liquids. Liquid Nubas are more refined, meaning they also contain more petroleum distillates, which also means they're not as durable as the pastes. The liquids are generally easier to apply and remove though. So weigh the pro's and con's, and choose the products THAT YOU WILL USE!

I use Meguiar's Even Coat Applicators.....it's a lot faster than setting up my PC to apply the wax.

Real Wax..................

After the clay bar and Zymol cleaner I apply my
Zymol concourse wax with my hands doing only
1/3 of the hood at a time wiping off with microfiber
towels. Then a fender or door until it's finished.
Complete job including wheels and tires takes just
about three hours. Upon completion the results
are very gratifying.

I used those for a while also, but they seem to waste too much product, and mine started coming apart at the seams. I now just use the meguiar's foam applicators
