diesel detailing

I went to the South Florida International Auto Show recently and asked an Infiniti rep what they used to detail their cars at the show and get the paint job looking so nice. To my dismay he told me watered down diesel. It sounded odd because I never heard of that. Does anyone else think this is crazy or was he correct?

Yeah, an old neighbour used to use that for his 30 year old Jeep! I thought he was kidding, but he swore by the stuff, and the body never rusted. Lasted longer than old Joe (may he rest in peace).

Re: diesel detailing

What type of Diesel? Vin? That sounds whack to me, but I'm curious as to the "science" behind this purported technique.

Re: diesel detailing

I used diesel many years ago on my cars... albeit for a short while. The diesel acts as a solvent and removes most contaminants stuck to the surface of the paint... like a cleaner wax does. Additionally, as anyone who has owned a diesel car/truck will tell you, diesel is so heavy it leaves a film on the paint (and everything else) that acts as a temporary protectant/sealer.

It does an excellent job cleaning the paint but won't give you the smoothness and high gloss that a good wax does.

Re: diesel detailing

When I was a kid, my father had an old chevy pickup he shined up using kerosene, damn, I couldn't believe how good it made that old truck look, so I can see what diesel would do, but why on a vehicle that doesn't look bad to begin with, I don't know!

Re: diesel detailing

I know this has nothing to do with this topic, but I have noticed you seem to know quite a bit about detailing. I had posted this earlier, but got no replies, the lower valence, black (rear) on my G got some light scratches on it, probably from an errant tumbleweed in a bad wind we had last week, any suggestions on what I can use to clean this up? I can live with it if not, but I always see it, it is really very minor. Thanks
Tom

Re: diesel detailing

Sorry, must've missed your post. How deep are the scratches? When you run through it w/ your fingernail, can you pick it up? If it's a deep scratch, there's nothing much you could do to fix it because that piece is not painted. If it's a light scratch that doesn't catch a nail, then it's possible claying it will remove the scratch. Very often, claying can help remove the surface marks and reduce the amount of visible scratches to the naked eye.

Re: diesel detailing

Really, clay will work on the black plastic there? No, you can't feel the scratch at all, you know how the black plastic is, if you get a scratch, it looks almost white, what I had thought about doing was getting some semi-flat black paint in a cloth and rubbing over the area, but I am afraid to try that, LOL! Thanks!

Re: diesel detailing

Hmmm......sounds like you have a minor scruff. Try claying it..........it'll probably do the job.

Re: diesel detailing

The last couple of times I wanted to spruce up the appearance of the lower (black plastic) valances, I applied the Meguiars Tire dressing... it looked pretty good.

Re: diesel detailing

Thanks for the help guys! I may try that, it's not really a big deal, just that my car is still rather new, I looked at it again today, and it doesn't look that bad! Guess we can be pretty **** when it comes to our cars sometimes!

Re: diesel detailing

Just to let you know, diesel isn't very flammable like Unleaded gasoline. Thats why in our state of california it's illegal to have gas cans in the back of your pickup truck, unless if it's diesel. Diesel engines run at a very high compression rate to ignite the diesel.. i'ts a very crude substance (no pun intended)... almost like oil
