Bad Paint From Factory???
Bad Paint From Factory???
Hello all! Going to place my order for a twilight blue 6-speed coupe next month (woo hoo!!) However, I have read a lot of reviews on the net about how the paint chips easily. Is this true?? Does the paint quality suck on the G? Any experience or help would be great!

Re: Bad Paint From Factory???
I personally haven't had too much issue with the paint on my D/G Coupe, but some of the guys and gals have noticed excessive paint chipping.
Most will agree that a clear bra is a must on these rides, and prolly should be your first mod.
Good luck with your new Coupe next spring.

In my experience, any car chips in front, or anywhere that protrudes, scoops, flared wheel wells, not a whole lot you can do about that. Now if there are some places where the paint is peeling, or cracking, that would be a defect!

The paint chips pretty badly along the inside of your door(the edge that sticks out chips pretty much if it comes in contact with anything). Also, if anyone even so much as taps your bumper it will probably chip...at least it has on my G(Black coupe). If you are super duper ****, maybe you will get away unscathed. So be careful if you get black or midnight blue.

The black chips very easily unless you drive it in a clean
rubber room!
Go for either the Clear or Colgan bra>

Now that is some what true. It really depends on the driving conditions you are in when you are driving.

Thanks for the help! Been waiting for this car a long time, finally going to hop in one. With the driving I do, I'll start my mods with a car bra.

yea, I have a black sedan and the paint sucks ***. My car has only chipped once in a tiny spot above the grill, but I have millions of swirl marks and CAN'T get rid of them. I never take my car to those auto gas station car washed or anything! Also, I got some waterspots on it a couple of days ago and still havent been able to get them out. And the most annoying thing, if I just touch the car, it puts a scratch in. Anyone having these problems??
Re: Bad Paint From Factory???
The problem you are experiencing is most likely because it's a black car, black shows every little swirl, scratch, even if you ran your hand across the paint, you'd probably see a "scratch" from that, black requires extra care, always has, always will!

The only problem I had on my sedan was the bumper, like the majority of people on here.
A few users on here and freshalloy note that a simply reshoot of the bumper by a reputable paint shop will be sufficient to ward off most chips without a clear bra (which I plan on getting shortly after a front end repaint).
Staying off the freeway as much as possible has saved my g from all but the one chip that screw up my front bumper to begin with.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I'm beginning to wonder if the factory paint on my car isn't defective. I've owned black cars before, as well as dark blue, and know the extra care that they require. I expect swirlmarks. But even with all my precautions (soft wash mitt, microfiber towels, waxing regularly) I still get new scratches every time I wash the car. But if that all it were I would still chalk it up to carelessness on my part. After all, it IS a black car.
But that's not all that concerns me. The paint has dappling in it, like the layers weren't sprayed evenly. This is especially apparent when looking at reflections on the curves of the fenders and roof. The reflections are wavy and discordant, like looking at a reflection in a rippled pond. It's not as noticable on the flat surfaces, but it's there too.
Also, the paint is more than just easily chipped. It's downright soft. Spray can latex is harder to scratch. Closing the drivers door yesterday, my fingers slid on the painted surface. (normally I try to close the door touching only the chrome trim). Carelessness on my part, sure...but looking at the door later, checking for fingerprints, I realized my fingers had left scratches in the paint. If the car were dirty, I'd buy it, but I had just washed it that morning.
This seems to be more than just the normal "black paint" issue. It's like they didn't put the hardener in the paint. Any one else having similar issues?

Its not defective paint so much as inferior paint. The whole industry has switched over to water-based automotive paint from solvent-based. This was due to the fact that solvent based paint was the number one cause of airborne polution from car factories, but the water-based are just not as strong as the solvent-based paint jobs you could have got a few years back. Everybodies having the same problem, search Audiworld and Bimmerfest forums for 'paint chips' for similar complaints, and yes, besides being soft nissan has had a hell of a time with getting consistant finish from their paint jobs, you should have seen some of the early 03 350Zs, the finish was different from one body piece to the next! In time manufacturers will refine the process and water-based paints will get better, but its just a fact of life that , for the time being, factory paint jobs will not be as good as they have been in the past
