Car got egged... how do I get this off?

Ugh now I remember why I'm glad I have a garage... was at my friend's house for maybe an hour on saturday night, parked on the street. In the morning I noticed that some stupid kids had randomly egged my car. The egg clipped the driver's side mirror and spread across the entire front fender. I immediately sprayed it down and wiped all the crap off but as I look at it now, there's still a huge smudge where the egg yolk was and several fine scratches. It appears that it damaged the clearcoat... am I screwed or should a good wax job do the trick?

Unfortunately egg usually means screwed. It's not so much the substance of the egg (though that is a problem) as the impact. When an egg hits a car it explodes, and this creates an impact crater in the clear coat. If what you're seeing looks like an impact crater than odds are the clear is irreparable damaged.

A couple things you can do to mitigate the damage. First, clean with alcohol and water, or vinegar. Either will neutralize the egg yolk and stop the paint from drying out. Second, polish the area by machine (PC or rotary) to minimize the surface damage. Last, re-wax/seal the area. If you're a perfectionist you're going to need a repaint (sorry!), if not a polish will help a lot and most folks would be fine with the damage thats left.

try claybar, if that doesn't work, try some polish (go from mild to course
until you can get it off) and wax afterwards.

if it's etched too deep you wont be able to get it off.
