Unhappy **UPDATE**Please dont read if you like nice rims!

Well, had my car detailed this week and made sure to say "only soap/water" on the rims. I have a set of Maya STM 20's on my coupe, had them for about 6months and only drove the card for about 2-3 months with them on there, never in the rain, snow or when salt was around. So needless to say they were still mint.

Long story short I get my car back and the lips are beyond ruined, at first they were completely oxidized, green spots you name it. I almost threw up and stabbed someone. So I let them know that there is an issue, they take my car back and now attempt to buff out this crap. After about an hour of buffing they managed to get the colors off which seemed awesome for me...from a distance. I get closer to the car and now my clear coat is 100% gone, the lips on all 4 rims look like they have dried milk all over them. I look closer, all 4 lips are scratched to hell. So now I am trying my best not to go insane. I get the owner of the business out there and he has the nerve to say he has nothing there that could do this, meanwhile his worker 2min earlier said they use this acid type of cleaning solution on steel wheels and painted wheels. So now we are arguing back and forth and i managed to get in touch with the company that employee's this guy who owns this detail shop. I kindly let him know the car went in perfect and now its complete crap. I told him I will go get estimates to make it right and return the estimates to him on monday.

So now there are 3 options.

redo the rims = $1000 for the 4 (I was told that all 4 will match but it wont look as nice as before, and my look a tad cloudy. I am not happy about this)

strip them down and chrome plate the lips $1600 for the 4 (I think I am going this route after hearing the first options possible result???)

new set of rims $4500.

Tomorrow should be an exciting day to say the least, I am sure worse case scenario they will agree on the $1000 and I will add the extra to get them chromed because I am not feeling the idea of having the possibility of them looking "milky". I would post a picture but it drives me insane seeing them like this so just picture them looking really....really bad

Any rim experts can add something to this? What is the deal with getting them redone and having them a little milky looking? Is this true? I know the prices aren't the best but I am not concerned with that right now. All I want is my rims to look nice again.

They should have some sort of business insurance, and that's who you should deal with.

You'll probably need to document somehow that repairing them will not return them to the state that they were in when you brought the car into the shop, therefore requiring replacement.

I know I can get in writing that redoing the rims won't result in a perfect rim. Because the guy at the rim shop said he had to tell me that because 99% chance that will be the case and I cant complain because I knew of it ahead of time. This is why he suggested I should have the rims disassembled and chrome plate the lip rather then re polishing them. Do you guys think I should go this route or should I push for a new set.

What I don't understand is they re obviously insured so paying $1000 or $4500 shouldn't make a difference because they would only be paying their deductible. I was even considering asking what their deductible was and if it was cheap enough I would be willing so pay for half if we can go the new set route. I of course haven't mentioned this, I want to see how it goes first but I will push for a new set and see how it goes.

sorry to hear.

I think the only way to get it back to original look is to send it back to
the manufacturer... you could have it repaired and perhaps have it
coated to a custom color....might be worth a try.

its hard to believe these 'detailers' don't use simple steps to cover
expensive wheels... basically tells you how unqualified some of these
people really are.

this is the 999999th time ive said this. people please wash your car yourselves. on a side note, dont let the dealer wash your car either. print out some sheets that say DO NOT WASH and scatter them around before you go in.

Just an update, as long as nothing goes differently. I am getting a new set of rims paid for. The owner of the detail shop finally admitted to using the acid and it being the cause. Of course he admitted this after i showed him the 3 letters from 3 different rim shops claiming the same issue. I am crossing my fingers, all I want is my rims to look how they looked on wednesday!

More power to you for not stabbing someone (violence is not always the best answer). I would've been super pissed. Bottom line if they give you problems I'd seek legal action. Usually a summons in hand will result in a fast resolution. Usually they should be insured so it should be nothing for them to file a claim.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thats why I never ever let anyone touch my car other than oil changes. Dealers are the worst, but some detailers such as this one are morons also. I had a clear coated set of rims ruined on a Ford Explorer like 8-9 yrs ago I'm still pissed. We all live and learn I know thats asy to say but at least your getting new rims. I just lived w cloudy rims for like 2-3 yrs til I sold the car.

CERTAUTOG35 I thought about it only because I am about to dump 6k or so on audio/video in my coupe. But the rims are to new, to nice and to high end to ghetto like that. The rim itself has chipping from their chemicals and buffing it for over an hour to fix. So I am just happy to get a new set out of the deal.

Hi-Tech_G's trust me man it wasnt easy. It sucks because it happened at the detail shop at my work. I was going insane thurs/fri because coworkers were asking me about them all day. I just kept thinking about your avatar and that for some reason relaxed me a bit

Now the question is do i get to keep my original rims, if so I would sell them off if anyone is interested they have about 2000 miles on them!

Hey guys, anyone have any suggestions. I am trying to find a generic form that I can print up and fill out basically stating xxxx admitted to wrong doing and has agreed to pay xxxxx by xxxx date. Anyone know of a simple form or should I just type one up?

I finally got the detail owner to admit it was them that did it, he also said he will pay for a new set of rims. but i know this guy and know he isnt exactly the most motivated person in the world so I would like to get something in writing to clear my head a bit. Any ideas?

Is it just me or does this seem to happen a lot with Maya rims?

I'd say write up a formal letter and get it signed by both you and him then get it notarized. Once it is notarized it is a binding legal document.

Texasscout, actually after people found out at work I heard from more then 1 person about the same issue they had with the same department in question. I person had a set just some no name set another had a set of nice volk sf's. So it's safe to say no one is safe :X

Hi-Tech_G, yea thats what I am thinking. I have someone here that will notarize it for me no issue. Is there somewhere online to get a generic formal letter or could someone give me ideas on how to word this bad boy so it sounds official.

Thanks
