where on the tips is this residue? I would have said Simple Green, but if you've tried that and didn't work, then you could try P21S Total auto wash. Its some pretty strong stuff and better smell than Simple Green.

The residue is between the actual exhaust pipe and the sleevethat goes over it as well as the ring mainly. its built up and hardened over time...There has to be a chemical that will loosen it but Im afraid if I use something harsh it will discolor the chrome...I was thinking of using some basic household cleaning products to get it off and then just polishing the chrome...

I would use the simple green but in a more concentrated form. I bought the large bottle that you mix with water. Just make a stronger concentration and try that.

i use wenol metal polish on the tips.

you can get it at williams sonoma. it leaves protective film while it
polishes that can withstand high temps (like cookware temps).
lasts a long time.

Wadding polish. Used it on my Harley all the time, works great. Comes in a tin, it's kind of like cotton soaked with some sort of kerosene like solvent. Makes chrome beautiful.
