Wet Sanding(Detail)

Has anyone had this done to their sedan? How were the results?

I ask because a body shop near me is offering same day wet sanding/detail for $150. Pretty reputable shop as well, but I still like to do some research before sand paper hits my paint job.

IMHO I would stay away. Same day and wetsanding don't go together unless it is being done by machine. It takes countless hours to get that done right. I'd ask them to walk me through the process and what exactly it entails before having them do any work. Maybe they buff and polish, which in most cases is all is needed for a car to have good looking paint.

wetsanding is pretty much unnecessary for most EVERY car. There are so many things I would do before resorting to wetsanding.

-wash my car
-claybar
-polish
-compound
-compound w/ wool cutting pad

then if none of that produced favorable results, I guess I'd wetsand the entire car, polish and buff then wax. Wetsanding is usually far more agressive than you really need to be to get your car looking showroom

pffftt 150$ that is a great price for actual wet sanding there are people that charge like 200 just for cleaning your car. Where do you live i need to come down there and get that done. ^^^^ with that all said and done clay bar polishes and porter cable pads sealeants etc. that is over 150$ id rather wetsand it have it look new again then spend 300$ on supplys to not have it come out as good

Ya but def stay away from doing it yourself if you havent done it before. Leave it to the professionals after they have wetsanded your car and polished it to a shine it will look brand new again.

Do people wetsand on a regular basis?? Never heard of anyone wetsanding a car like you would normally do with polishing and waxing....i've only wetsanded it myself when I was trying to get a key scratch off....

wetsanding will go through your clearcoat ALOT faster than any other method. I wouldn't recommend doing it on a regular basis.

ya dont get it done on a regular basis every once in a long long long long long time if your car gets really bad. So if this is your first time and professionals are doing it you will be fine with the clearcoat.

what he said /\/\/\

but if your car just has your typical chips, dings and scratches, well, chips you cant wetsand out; you gotta touch them up. dings and scratches can usually be buffed out if they didnt get thru the clear... I actually don't know if I would ever wetsand my car really... unless I was prepping it for paint.

Good points. I need to get over the porter cable price and just buy it, but I do know how to detail my car without it. I clay twice a year and I'm in Atlanta so I don't really know if claying more than that will help. I just thought this was an interesting way to detail the car. I mean a wet sand and seal it with a polish and wax. Seems like that would get the paint poppin'. :-) Oh and I meant to say it'd cost $250.

Like most already stated, wet sanding is not a viable way to restore your finish.
Most wet sanding is done to new paint, to remove the orange peel, and flaten the surface for a gloss shine.

Wet sanding a car that already has had that done from the factory, would only diminish the layer that remains.......much better off with a polish and orbital machine, then follow up with a cleaner/wax or wax to finish off the detail.

i repainted my car but my original paint didnt have much clear coat on it especially the mirrors and spoiler when i buffed it i could see the red color on my pad. you just need to be carefull on certain areas in the car because 150 could end up costing alot more. because they can sand it down and glaze and wax it so when you pick it up its shiney but in a couple of weeks if there isnt much clear it will start to look real dull.
