Windshield repair

What kind of results can be expected from a chip repair in a windshield? I had one repaired, still see a couple of very small "nicks" now, is that pretty standard? It is a lot better than the chip was, just wondering if the job was done right.

Re: Windshield repair

If you lease, don't do it ! Have it replaced instead. When you turn the car in, they will replace the windshield and bill you. Also, did you know that many of the insurance companies (like Allstate) rate you on how many claims you have, not really the dollar amount. So if your insurance pays $40 for a "raspberry" repair (no deductable) versus a $100 deductable and a new windshield - in their mind it's all the same. So spend the $100 and get it back to perfect. Where I am, the windshield guys will come to your house or apartment and do the replacement in the lot - even on a Saturday or Sunday.

Re: Windshield repair

I did it myself with my 2001 Maxima before I turned the car in. They didnt even mention it. if you need to replace a windshiled - wait unitl approx. 30 days before renewal. This will have it fly under the radar.

Re: Windshield repair

No lease here, but do they really expect a perfect windshield at lease termination? I can see if it's a large chip or a crack, but just a nick? How much does a windshield cost for a G? I have never had any problems with my insurance on comprehensive claims, been with them for like 35 years now!

Re: Windshield repair

Not every place does a good job with these types of repairs. The best usually leave a barely noticeable pinhead sized dot. Don't go to the cheapest place, go to were they have a lot of experience and look at their work.

I've had repairs done many times with various vehicles over the years. I found one place that was particularly good and have stuck with it. I found it after another place did a crappy job, and this place fixed it for free because he had some spare time. Made the first repair about 80% better!

Also, the longer you wait to get a repair done after a chip or crack, the less successful the repair can work. Any dirt that gets in there makes it more noticeable. I carry a bit of non-residue tape around in the car with me. As soon as I get a chip, a piece of the tape goes on over top to keep it clean until I can get it repaired.

Re: Windshield repair

I guess that's what I have now, two pinhead sized dots, but sometimes in certain sunlight, you can see some "webbing" there, maybe I should check around to see if anyone can improve it!

Re: Windshield repair

It's almost impossible to re-do once it's done. The guy told me that he'd have been able to do it much better if he did it in the first place since the resin already had set and prevented any more penetration. Also the first guy drilled out the spot needlessly, leaving a much bigger noticeable spot. Oh well, at least I know where to go since then. Good news is that it wasn't with my G.

Oh, mine isn't that bad gordgee, and they didn't drill it out, I think it is really not noticeable, except to me since I know where it is, I have showed it to people and they are surprised how big a chip it originally was.

Re: Windshield repair

Well, damn, I'm back, is the G a stone magnet or what? Today, got another stone, I think anyway, made a very loud sound just like the last time, but I don't see an chip and there was no "powder" there like other times I have had a stone hit, I stopped to eat, I even inspected it before going in, when I came out, there was a crack where the stone hit! I'm sure this crack will not be repairable, it seems to be growing longer gradually! I haven't had a stone chip or crack in a windshield since like '90, I've had this car three months, and have had two, geez!

Re: Windshield repair

Sorry to hear about another crack. It may still be repairable, but you'll have to go in to see. The repair can at least stop the crack from spreading. If any crack is in your line of sight, it's usually too distracting anyway for a repair to work well. Then it's replacement time!
