washing off road salt

I want to wash off road salt/dirt built up behind the wheels (suspension) and unde the car. I am thinking about spraying water directly at those areas. Would that cause any harm (rust, etc) ?

Thanks

Not at all-- blast away. Water gets there anyway, but it'd be nice to get the salt out, as it's what really will rust you up.

With my Mustang, I would take it to a full service car wash that had an "underbody flush" after a snowstorm, not sure how effective that was, but couldn't hurt!

We don't get much (if any) salt on roads around here. BUT you may want to try a marine product called "Salt Away". It is used for getting rid of salt on and in boats. I use it on my boat and it works well. Have NO CLUE if it will work on road salt though.
It can be bought at Boat US and West Marine.

Re: washing off road salt

Man, my car is covered in so much salt, it's depressing. My maxima, that is . The G is sitting in the garage, dry and away from all the salt. It's a great feeling to see my shiny G in the garage, with all that salt on all other cars and on the road. More snow to come tomorrow. I guess the G is stuck in the garage for at least another week

Re: washing off road salt

i just got my first car wash in over 2 months of snow and salt.... man i forgot how nice the G looks when its clean and shiny.... washing the underbody and wheel-wells doesnt hurt....you can always get one of those yard sprinklers and drive over it a few times (dont drive over the hose... hose will break usually)

Re: washing off road salt

The road salt is killing me.

I just hand washed my car yesterday, and it was the only wash I've done in about 2 months, except for the dealer wash 2 weeks ago. After I was done, I noticed huge swirl marks where the salt used to be (much worse than my initial minor swirls). Mind you I hosed all that stuff off before I touched the car. I could blame the dealer, but I think I should be blaming myself for letting the dealer wash the car when it had tons of road salt on the sides panels. It was overcast when the dealer washed it, so I didn't notice when I left that day.

Ugh. Sometimes I wonder about my high maintenance relationship with my black car.

You know, this is why I haven't ever bought a black car, they look great, but time shows every nick, swirl, plus showing all the dust and dirt, you are right, black is high maintenance for sure! I can just imagine how bad it looks with all the salt residue on it, I had maroon and dark red vehicles for the last 11 years, glad I got my G in the brilliant silver, it surprises me how dirty it is when I wash it, LOL!

Re: washing off road salt

I have a related question. What is the easiest way to get the salt marks off the black trim along the bottom of the car? I finally got to wash my baby yesterday and do I nice CG application, but I could not get the marks off the black trim.

Thanks.

Re: washing off road salt

don't feel too bad...I've never had anyone touch my car so far...and even though I'm quite careful when washing...I'm beginnig to see all kinds of little swirl/scratch marks at certain angles on my car....I know its too cold in the northeast right now to start trying to polish and wax it so I'll wait until we get a warm stretch and see what happens...by the way I have ivory pearl so I really feel for you guys with the darker colors....any good swirl/scratch remover products I should know about????thanks 2old4this

Re: washing off road salt

To get anything off the bottom trim, salt included, use an old rag and some Armour-All or similar plastic/vinyl cleaner.

Re: washing off road salt

Thanks!

I wasn't sure what I could safely use without discoloring it or drying it out.

Re: washing off road salt

im sure you know this, but make sure your brakes are cool before you wash. the cold water can crack your brake pads if they are hot,.
