How best to remove registration sticker on license plate?

I've just been using a kershaw knife lol, there's goitta to be an easier way, but I do believe the stickers are designed to destroy upon attempt to remove.

How to get get clean smooth surface for application of new sticker--rubbing alcohol?

Go to the DMV and tell them someone stole your plate. BAM, new plate, no stickers.

only downside to that is most states charge more for a whole new plate than just the stickers

I just clean the current sticker, and put the new sticker on top of the old one.

I take my time though, so that you can't see the sticker beneath it, otherwise it'd look tacky imo.
