Ok, seriously though, did you only wash and wax?

If you really want to get this car clean, you'll need to fully detail it which includes:

1) Wash and Dry

2) Clay bar to remove contaminants, and possibly wash again

3) Polish and swirl removers to make the car shine

4) Wax/sealant to protect the paint

Take a look at the care and detailing sticky and peruse George's ask a detailer.

Those swirls you get are usually the result of washing and waxing. Make sure you're using proper technique to minimize those (i usually go with the way wind goes over the car, not in circles, 2 buckets and religiously rinsing the mitts), and some proper tools (microfiber cloths, etc). Doesn't have to be expensive. Get you two buckets, some megs car wash (i only use 4 or so capfuls per 5g), sheepskin mitts and mf towels. Ought to run you $40 or so at Autozone to get setup. I would recommend getting 2 sheepskin, and a third mf mitt for the wheels (it's neon green at Advance, bout 5 bucks), a good waffle weave drying towel (wash w/o detergent, air dry b/t carwashes). The mf towels from AZ are good enough to last a few times for interior work and are cheap.

Good buffer should go a long way in getting out what's there (don't burn the edges!), and then proper cleaning, drying, sealing/waxing etc ought to keep it that way Can't help the @#$ that happens out on the road, but a garage goes a long way

The last time I washed, waxed, and had 3 different Meguiars bottles. I think one was supposed to act as a claybar, the other was cleaner, and one was some kind of thick junk, and then you'd put on the hard wax. Between each bottle you would do the wax on / wax off motions and clean each area well between steps.

It looked good for that day, lol.
What you used was probably meguiars' 3 step process. There was no claybar in the process. There was no removal of swirls at all. You need to either have your car professionally detailed or get a Porter Cable to do it yourself. If you go to autopia.org, you will learn everything you ever needed to make your car look great and keep it that way. If you remove the swirls, your car will look great without any wax at all. The wax just protects the paint after it looks great.

Like you, I despise the work going into making my car look show-room beautiful. My strategey, which is pretty good, is to handwash the car with a good mit (be sure to rinse the mite 5-10 times during the wash cycle to take the dirt/grime off of it), dry it with microfiber towels and then apply Colinate or Nu-Finish. The Colinate 845, is an insulator wax that leaves a slippery coat of sealant that lasts >6 months (it's used on boats, so imagine that it protects well against raod salt), even in the PA winters with all of the salt. Nu-Finish also leaves a descent shine and lasts months.

Keep in mind that the difference between the Maguire's, Zaino, Mother's and these waxes will be somewhat negligeble to the naked eye unless your looking carefully at the shine and depth. Purists will laugh at this; however, not being obsessive, compulsive and highly addicted to my car's appearance, this works well and leaves my car looking better than >95% of the cars on the street.

Good Luck! Also, go to Epinions.com to read reviews on the producst I mentioned and you'll see that most reviewers will give similar marks to the above mentioned waxes, regardless of the hype!

I did what you did, but included the clay bar; results were above satisfactory.

On a more philosophic note, as one reads the posts, especially those with the usual (and often expensive) modifications to the suspension, rims, engine, etc., you get the sense that we are owned by the car and this ownership translates into some kind of addictive obsession with shine, looks, power, being noticed by others (which we mistake as admiration), etc. We laugh and smile at our compulsive need to always love on our car more than our family (this I see quiet a bit where I live)-- and I am confused by this enjoyment over something that can't love us back or even give us good sex!!!

Just bathe it 1-2 times per week, put on a durable shine, keep it maintained and wallah, you're fine and have lots of time to enjoy the others aspects of life-- like driving it around.
