Dark tints--difference in seeing out
Dark tints--difference in seeing out
I bought my DG coupe slightly used with 6,000 miles. It already had tint, but I'd like it to be darker. I'm not sure what percentage it is now in the rear, but I'd say 20-30. My brother just got 5% done in the rear and it doesn't look any more difficult to see out of while driving than mine does. Is there really not much difference in visibility from one low percentage to another?
Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
I have 5% on the back and rear windows. I’m a little more careful at night when I’m backing out of my driveway or in other dimly lit areas. Other than that, I don’t think there’s any real difference. In fact, I have 20% on my front windows and although there is a difference between the two, IMO, it’s not that dramatic.

Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
I've got 5% all around...in the day it's awesome w/ no visibility problems at all. At night is a different story...well lit streets are fine but if the area isn't well lit it can be difficult. Biggest problem is making lefthand turns on a street divided by a concrete median. It's really tuff to see where te median starts especially if there aren't any street lights around. When this happens I either roll down my window or lean up & look left thru the winshield. It does take a bit to get used to...I'm almost considering taking it back & going w/ 15% on the sides. Luckily the guy that tinted the windows is a friend of mine & he said he wouldn't charge me if I wanted to go lighter.

Yes, going w/ limo in the rears would make it difficult to see @ night............be careful, especially when backing up. If you're planning on replacing the rear tint, make sure the place that you take it to will ensure you they remove ALL of the leftover glue on the glass..........anything they miss will be very visible on the new tint.

Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
I wouldn't go 5% in the rear, I had it on my last car and it was like backing up blind at night. 20% is great. That's what I have right now and I have no visibility issues.
Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
Yup thats the same problem I've been having. My last car had like 25-30% tint and there were no problems. The tint I have now is one step below limo, and I was making a left hand turn onto an unlit street and wasnt really paying attention. I started to turn, looked to my left and went "oh sh-t" because I couldnt see ANYTHING out the side. But like you said, just takes some getting used to.
I also have that annoying "starring" effect out the back window at night (dont know how to explain it, basically a cars headlights sort of appear the whole way up the back between the defroster lines so you see 1 set of headlights and like 10 "starred" headlights from the same car). I dont know if its the type of tint, or darkness of tint, or the car design. Again just takes some getting used to but its near impossible for me to spot cop headlights in my mirror anymore.

Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
GFLY,
There is plenty difference from 5% to 20% rear tint..... i had 5% on my old car, and it was a PAIN to look out, now i have 20% on the G and it is no problem to see back there at night...
20% looks great on the G, because of the steep angle of the rear window, it looks darker than it actually is. I wouldnt go lower than 20% back there....especially on DG body color... the windows look better "smoked"

Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
Forgive my 'tint newbie' observation here, but.....
I take it that for tint %'s discussed the lower the %age the darker the tint is? Does this then relate to the amount of light allowed through or something?
Thanks,
Max

Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
Yes, exactly. Low percentage = darker, less transparency and light getting in the car.

Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
Yep, the percentages stand for light transmission. The lower the percentage of light entering into the car, the darker it is.

Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
I have 5% on the two front side windows and 5% doubled on the back 3 windows. It looks cool as hell, but I can't see shizzle out of the back windows, day or night.
I just stick my head out of the window, and keep the sides windows down.
It sure does look good in the day, and is very effective at keeping the interior cool during the Las Vegas summers.
I wouldn't recommend this setup, but I've owned various cars tinted this way for over 12 years.. You definitely have to be observant, and careful. I mosty worry at night that some schmuck will have his headlights off and SMACK.

Damn Gdup I have 5% all around too but damn double in the back? I barely drive at night with 5% but its worth it in the day. You are right it does "look cool as hell", especially with the cb color.

Re: Dark tints--difference in seeing out
i have 5 all the way around and it is hard to see backin up sometimes. i also agree with cruz it is hard to see the median when making a left on a divided street. all in all its not too bad you get use to it after a while. i was think bout gettin another layer of 5 put on the back windows but think it would be too hard to see out. plus you already cant see in cause i have my windshield done as well and that makes the car even more darker.
gdup: how is driving during the day with the 2 layers is it bout the same or is it much darker. like you said seein out at night is tough but i already sometimes have to roll the window down and stick my head out so im not too worried bout that.
