Wheel/Tire cleaner on brakes - OK?

Just wondering, since most wheel cleaners are spray on/agitate/hose off, is it OK if the wheel cleaner gets on the brakes? Or does it not mater if you hose it off. I've heard some of the cleaners can be pretty harsh if left on.
