Exhaust tip detailing

I found that the exhaust tip covers slide right off if you tug on them hard enough. I had to wiggle one of them back a forth a bit to unstick it from the exhaust pipe.

Taking the covers off makes the polishing job about 1000x easier. Just grab any metal polish and a towel and go to town. When you put them back on, you have to shove 'em pretty hard (as friction is the only thing that keeps them in place). You can definitely feel a 'click' when they are in the correct position.

Before I realized that these came off, I was sitting in the cold on the pavement trying to be really careful with metal polish so close to the paint...all the while thinking "there must be a better way...".

Anyways, go try it! Gotta keep that G looking sharp!

Didn't know this! Great tip, I was planning to polish them very soon after all this rainy weather dies down.

I happened to used 'Brasso' because it was what they had at Lowe's and it was about $2 a bottle. Its just generic metal polish (for chrome/aluminum/stainless/etc.). I've seen similar polishes at auto parts stores as well for a few bucks more.

It is really easy to use and it works really well. Just wipe some on with a towel or sponge and let it haze, and then buff it with a clean towel.

I think the tips are aluminum, but I'm not sure...

I have a 2007 G35x. The tips (and the rest of the exhaust system) are all stock.

Brasso is pretty much the way to go. Wipe it on with one cloth, wipe it off with another.

Just try to pull them off. If it's like the sedan, they will come loose. If its not, then they won't!

The actual 'exhaust tip' does seem to be fixed (permanently) to the muffler. In the pic above, you can see that the part that is removable on the 07 sedan is just a 'sleeve' that wraps around the actual exhaust pipe.

I didn't realize they came off also.

I wonder how much these are if I need to get a replacement from parts. Time to contact the dealer next week.

Stupid me managed to bend one out of shape backing into a parking berm. The dent has been making me nuts.

If you have any stubborn carbon inside of outside. You can use Steel wool, Which works excellent.

Does the tip stay on ok after you put it back on? Does it feel more loose or anything then before?

The fit is still *very* snug. It was actually kinda hard to get it back on - I thought I was gonna have to bend it or something to make it slide on easier.

If I had to estimate, I'd say there's a 0% chance of the things coming loose on their own.
