Re: Tire dressing

Shader,
I'm not one who heard it absorbed mositure, I had used it on a vinyl top I had on a car some time back, and the top got all "dry" looking within a year and I had it replaced because it looked so bad, I assumed it was the Armor All, the new one never got like that, I used nothing on it, just kept it clean!

Re: Tire dressing

This is a pretty big myth about tire (and other) surface treatment products. When I was restoring classic convertibles, my parts supplier was a devout Armor All hater. One summer, we took two new identical '65 Mustang armrests (red vinyl) and put them out in the sun. Every week we treated one with Armor All, and just wiped the other with a cloth. After about 3 weeks the untreated one (control) was already starting to fade. At the end of summer the control was dry, cracked, and looked 5yrs old. The treated sample was only slightly faded (for being in straight sun for 12 weeks), but wasn't cracked or dry whatsoever.

Myths = Bad
Data from controlled experiments = Good

Shader,
Well, then perhaps the top didn't get like that from the ArmorAll, from your test, sounds like I was wrong!

Re: Tire dressing

I just tried Zaino's tire dressing, and have to say that I am impressed. I have tried everything; gels, Eagle 1, Mequires, vinyl conditioner, etc. I have been very pleased with all of Zaino's products, so I gave it a try. It is very watery. You apply it with a sponge, etc. and it dries in about 5 minutes. It leaves a nice "new" look to the tire (not an overly glossy look), but you can add several coats to make it glossier if desired. With the amount I used, it looks like this one bottle will last me 5 years. I like it because it dries totally. There is no stickyness to attract dust or dirt and it ABSOLUTELY does NOT "sling." I checked all of the body panels for spots and there were none. I have had it on for a week now, and they still look new. (This is my daily driver)

Thanks Shader. There's nothing better than seeing science bust up a myth or OWT.

Re: Tire dressing

I just bought some Eagle 1. I was going to let it sit but my GF didn't want to drive and I didn't have a chance to wipe it off. Got all over my rims and new there is brake dust EVERYWHERE! Need to wipe off next time but the tires looked great! Must've gotten some on the treads because I was peeling (in a 5AT) for a few days.

Re: Tire dressing

I still love the Meguire's Endurance High Gloss gel more than anything else I've tried, even though it slings off a little when you first drive after applying it. I wipe off the excess after applying it to minimize this. I've never had a problem with cleaning off the small amount that slings onto the the splash guards (on this car or my old one); it wipes off easily and doesn't seem to hurt the paint. I consider it a worthwhile trade-off for the dark, glossy, long-lasting shine it gives my tires. 'Still #1 on my list!
